How to get rid these bugs?

Post  BCFotos on 8/25/2014, 5:40 pm

I have these black bugs all over my zucchini plant.  What are they and how to get rid of them without using commercial pesticide (I am try to organic veggies)?

Those look like aphids. Have you tried some homemade insecticidal soap? Lady beetles LOVE them!

Thanks for your reply.  Do you have a formula for the homemade organic insecticide?

Spray them with a homemade insecticidal soap solution. Use dish soap, not detergent. Then blast 'em with a stream of water.

Nice video. I learned that my pump sprayer is inferior to his! Embarassed Has anyone else found that the Round Up brand of sprayer is as good as shown in this video??

Sanderson, I have two of the "inferior" kind. And really, they work just fine. One has a more "misty" spray pattern and that's the one I use on my seedlings. The other one I use when I spray milk or whatever on the outside plants.

While that "Round-Up" sprayer seems more rugged, there *must* be other brands that carry the same sprayer under their logo. Personally, I'm not willing to send *any* of my funds to that company, nor am I willing to advertise for them, so-- I'll stick to my "inferior" sprayers. It's a "vote with your dollars" kind of thing.

Thank you, Molly. Just looking for a really big, more powerful pump sprayer. I have spider mites up the wazoo.

Totally agree.  What are the brand names of the 2 sprayers you have, Molly?

CC, one has a "Flo-Master" logo on it (it looks just like the "inferior" one in the video) and the other one says "Grab & Go Multi-Use Sprayer". The "Grab & Go" one is the one with the finer spray, IIRC.

I don't remember which one I got where, but it may be that the "Grab & Go" was from Aubuchon and the other from Home Depot, but it could be vice-versa.

If you could see the large area and infrastructures I have to spray, you would call it an event! Very Happy

The round-up sprayers on Amazon get poor reviews. Lots of other ones get great reviews, though. I always like to check customer reviews on Amazon. Especially the negative ones, as they're often more honest and useful.

Any of the sprayers with a brass nozzle seem to work better. I have a couple of the el-cheapo models to spray the fungicide & spinosid with. I find they are OK for just a foliar spray. It also keeps me straight between them & the herbicide.
If you have a big area a backpack sprayer is the way to go. You can easily keep pumping while you spray to keep the pressure up plus they are a little larger. Expect to pay $100 bucks for one unless you can find a Craigslist deal.

Camp,  You're funny! Very Happy   I finished spraying for spider mites and it only took 1 gallon.  99 times to pump but only 1 gallon.  I'll quit whimpering.

But, the hose bottle sprayer dribbles and is wimpy.  It's time to soapy wash all of the landscape of the sticky summer pollution.  The landscape plants, tables, house facade, etc.  Whimper.
