Sea products for the compost/Mix

Post  sanderson on 9/20/2014, 2:10 pm

Last year, I bought Kelp meal from Kelp4Less.com, so of course I keep getting their ads. I even made one compost pile with Pacific kelp, but trips to the coast don't always coincide with compost making.

I like the idea of some sea product in the compost, so I am asking what you think of the following products:

Kelp Meal granules for mixing in the Mix
Kelp powder for mixing and spraying on the plants or soil
Crushed crab shells for mixing in the Mix

Sounds good to me!  But why would you do that? Is your garden not growing well? I use seaweed in my compost pile because I don't want to use the manure...

I have also dumped old kitty kelp pellets into my compost pile, but only because they were around and no one would eat them..

thinking  Why, indeed.  You've got me reconsidering.

The only reason would be trace elements?  Things are growing fine right now so maybe this is one expense I don't need.  I'm not going to add Azomite or any other commercial product.

Trace elements need to be replaced.

Camp, so what do you think of a sea product? The crushed crab shells sounded like they would be a slow release source that stays in the mix, instead of dripping out the bottom.

I throw shells and fish leavings into my compost pile. I love the lobster compost.

I throw all sorts of things including most of the garden rubbish into the compost pile and some wood ash. Thus the cycle begins again. If I had seaweed that would also go in the compost pile, after being rinsed of course.
