I tried to order some and the "Out of Stock" notice appeared.  I sent an email just to make sure that they are out.

Is there another supplier that folks trust?

http://www.seedsavers.org/onlinestore/Garlic/Garlic-German-Red-OG.html

Seed savers exchange (above) says they have German Red - I've bought seeds from them, but not garlic.

My garlic is on the way from Southern Exposure - when I looked tho - they don't have German Red:
http://www.southernexposure.com/

When googled German Red a couple of other companies claim to have this variety.

I am not happy with Filaree

First year ordering from them
based on recommendations on the forum.
They sent me an e-mail today that the garlic was on the way.  I requested they ship it the third week in October but apparently they didn't put that in their system.  This is about a month too early for my climate and I am not happy with them!  Nothing I can do now.  Their wonderful customer service says they will not charge my account until my order ships,  guess they are more interested in maximizing profits by shipping earlier than honoring a gardeners request.  I have my own garlic from last year which is about 1/3 of what I wanted to plant. Off to the organic supermarket in late October I guess.

MB, Aren't they whole garlics with the cloves still intact? Mine are either braided or sitting patiently on the kitchen counter.

Same here. They sent this about 5 weeks too early. I guess I'll plant then a little earlier this year, but not 5 weeks early.

I have had mine for three weeks, along with an  order of shallots. They are still in the box they came in and will be just fine whenever you want to plant them. I have a lot of leftover garlic from last year still handing which I also will plant next month.

As others noted, my request for a later delivery was ignored too.

Re: Early planting-- Couple years back I planted mid Sept. instead of mid October.  The harvest was very good despite an early start.  I recall being very concerned with so many green leaves sticking out of the snow.  It's good that northern type garlic bulbs are winter hardy.

I'm planting saved bulbs and this new batch of purchased bulbs over the next few days and be done with it.  If its going to be as cold lots o  as last year then maybe some extra time to establish roots is a good idea.

Mine came in 2nd week in Sep.  Down here in the South, I don't usually plant until Nov.  The bulbs seem to be holding up fine in the A/C house.

I purchased from Filaree farms.  I did not choose a date.  They chose it for me.  My order is being shipped 10/15.  Which should be a good date.  First frost is around 10/28.  First hard freeze is around Thanksgiving.

Sanderson, did you ever find any?

I keep thinking I'm going to go thru Baker Creek, but things are a little crazy right now...  sigh...  maybe tomorrow...  They've got some Russian I'd like to try.

My order of garlic and shallots came in today - even though the co promised "shipment at correct time to plant".  Think I have a month before they should go in the ground.  Hope they stay happy until it is really time to plant.

Marie, I placed an order with Seed Savers. I do want to add that Filaree sent a speedy reply confirming that they were already out, a very nice, personal type reply. They could have just left me hanging for a day or two, maybe making me too late to order from anyone else. I bought a Russian Red, or was it a German Red, from the Petaluma seed bank (Baker Creek) but they didn't grow last year. They said they were considering whether to carry them. I didn't see garlic in their catelog.

Got an email from Filaree yesterday advising they're on the way. I asked back when I ordered how to store til I'm ready to use. They said keep in cool dry place. I won't be ready to plant in my smart pots til the third week of this month. Our weather here is rainy, but temps still pretty mild.

This will be my first year growing garlic. Can't wait!

I ordered from Burpee.  They didn't ship to me till September 22.  Still haven't got them in the ground.  Between fall clean up and throwing my back out, still haven't gotten them in the ground.  Hope it's not too late.  This is my first year for garlic.

Denese
I didn't get mine in the ground yet either, been cold windy rainy sleety and even some little snow bits the past 24 hours.  Today is still too cold and windy  for me so the bulbs will have to wait.
I want to enjoy the planting experience Smile

Received mine from Seed Savers. I was almost like a commercial for fast delivery. Hang up the phone and the post lady is at the door. I think I will start with one square now,. Then one a week to see when is the best time to plant. The Experiment.

Denese, no garlic expert here, there is so much to learn!  You could look online or call your extension service to find out when your area can expect a hard freeze.  You're suppose to plant a few weeks in advance of that time.  The time of course is not etched in stone, only mother nature knows for sure.   Also from your other comment if you try a leaf corral I used fencing with 2 by 4 inch openings then lined it with cardboard to keep leaves from flying out, worked out pretty well, I'll do it again this year.

Sanderson, I remember a couple years back receiving my order of one pound or 5 large size garlic bulbs from seed savers and they provided a very nice sheet with planting and harvesting directions.

This year I ordered from Filaree and not only were there no directions but they sent bulbs that were pretty small too. Though I was pleased they are certified organic. This order took nine smallish bulbs to fulfill the pound I ordered.  Both orders were for German Red that are typically large bulbs.  Just sharing my experience and wonder what others think.  I might be picky I suppose..

Re: Garlice order received, anyone else in our region?

Post  Yardslave on 10/5/2014, 7:39 pm

I have some organic California White softnecks that I'm going to set in beds soon. Last season's crop of garlic was the German and the Italian reds. The Reds were flavorful, but didn't store well enough for me to waste precious water on. One of the two reds had a bit of a hot bite to it, and my wife found it off putting, so rather than growing something that won't make it to the table, I'll stick to planting the Whites and hope that I can keep them watered enough if the winter rains don't happen Mad
