Reintroducing myself

Post  Ha-v-v on 10/9/2014, 9:18 am

Hi all, thought I would re-introduce myself after being gone so long.
My name is Denise, wife to Jeff and mom to 5 people. We are still working on our log home while living it now. I still SFG with three new beds that went in this last year, one for sweet potatoes 3ftx6ftx12" (decent harvest I was hoping for more), strawberry bed 2x6x6" only a couple plants there. My biggest favorite is the asparagus bed that is 3x6x18" I have split it in half as i only had crowns enough for 3x3ft. Slats separate it. I have also replaced my pine boards after rotting with cedar, 3x6x6" dog eared non treated fencing is so nice! I had to do some rigging to get them to 8 ft for my existing 4x8 beds but totally worth it. It's winter planting time, so today is plant some onions, garlic and other winter greens. Oh I live in the south in Mississippi just above Louisiana.
Denise

P.S.
I also have tried my hand at hugulkulture a tiny row of it we will see, Oh and my biggest excitement is Dec, when we cut the trees needed for our mushrooms in Jan.

BIG hug Good to see you again!

I bet you're ecstatic to get out of the travel trailer you've been living in for years.

As I recall, you owe us some videos of Jeremiah hard at work building your new log house.  (hint, hint!)

Welcome back!

Log cabins are incredibly cool. Like sanderson says, we'd love to see some pictures.

Hugelkultur in a row sounds ... hmm. I'm used to thinking of it as almost amorphously shaped, or spreading throughout a broad area, under trees, etc. I'm curious to see or read what you might have done there, too. I haven't tried it yet myself, but hugelkultur sounds so wonderfully sustainable and potentially low-maintenance and productive.

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome back !!! I wish I could go and click like on all the posts Smile.
Boffer we are still working on the house, moved into it last year with no daubing, chinking, windows or doors Smile The boys and that I that is. Jeff has been working in Tennessee for the last year, by the time he is done he will have been gone a year and a half. I do have pictures, I just found the winter pictures with snow and the house wrapped in plastic. I will be sharing pics of things as soon as I can. And yes to your question about being out of that travel trailer, that turned into a motor home and travel trailer. Living primitively was and is worth being out of the trailers.

Mushrooms are still on the list of finish research and so far I have learned you cut the wood needed in Dec and put the plugs in Jan, before that is done I will make sure I am cutting at the right time. We will be using oak and sweet gum. I have picked out where they will grow and the tree and limb we will use, we have an oak that is in our backyard that needs one limb removed, it will serve a great purpose.

I am glad to be back happy hi
I have new to me tools now! Another story, another time Smile

Thank you AtlantaMarie, nice to meet you too.
Fall weather is here and I love living in the south, got my winter veggies in, still have a few items left like onions and some other root crops I hope to get in today.
