New from Lake Forest, CA

Post  mrseltzer on 5/3/2010, 2:25 pm

First of all thank you to those who have responded to my questions about building boxes. My husband finished building three boxes and one is filled with dirt. I am currently planting herbs in one of the boxes. Another box will be tomatoes, basil and peppers. I'm not sure how the third will work.

We are newbies at SFG, but not at traditional gardening. I was wondering if there is any information on the website specific to herbs? For instance how many time plant can I plant per SF. I found some info in Mel's book, but I was looking for more. Any ideas?

Again many thanks for your help-

Mary Seltzer

Welcome to the SFG forum! I am also in California, however we are North of you in the San Francisco Bay area.

The SFG forum is a great group of people. If you have any questions, it is often fastest to just search the forums for previous answers or just jump in and post a new topic.

Have you checked what zone you are in? It looks like your area is described as a wonderful year round growing season. Please share pictures when you get a chance!

I am in the same boat. I have one herb box and found a few guidelines but mostly I am just guessing. Next season I think I will intersperse the herbs with the veggies. I have done the following, and I am not guaranteeing I am right:

Green = Apr 7; Blue = Apr 21; Yellow = April 9; Purple = May

Basil 2

Basil 2

Basil 2

Bunching Onions 16

Cilantro 4

Garlic 9

Garlic 9

Garlic 5

Cilantro 4

Dill 2

Dill 2

Parsley 2

Cilantro 4

Dill 2

Ginger 3

Parsley 2

I am not holding out a lot of hope on the ginger, but thought I would give it a try. Since I just got it from the produce department it may never sprout, plus tho hot, this ain't the tropics.
