LOL!  We had a cold front last week and I think it got down to 62℉.  In January we normally have a couple of weeks where temperatures dip to the 40s℉ at night.

Or this...

Although the arrow is not pointing far south enough.  Fort Lauderdale is near Miami in South Florida, and this is our very best time of year to garden.  Wink

Marie, the next time you come for a visit I would love to give you a garden tour in person.  Seriously!  I'd love to meet you, as well as Sanderson (from WAY across the country.... LOL!).  Come on down!  I'll have a papaya for you.

lol!

That's not far from the truth!  Realistically, people here break out the winter coats and bundle up when it gets to the mid to lower 60s.  But up in Chicago they'd be out playing in the park in shorts at the same temps. I grew up in Southern California near San Diego where it cools off at night. Here the humidity holds the heat.

Re: VIDEO GARDEN TOUR - Update

Post  jerry552 on 12/7/2014, 6:55 pm

Hey Everyone,
Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. Gardening in sunny Florida has always been a challenge. A  little background. I have been practicing Mels Square foot gardening since his first book. I still have it along with the new ones. In addition, I have two aquaponic systems that are fairly successful. Its difficult to keep the fish alive, but that's another story for later. I have just begun experimenting with worm and compost tea approach. If you think about our ancestors and how they managed to grow food before the chemical fertilizers were invented, there must be a way. I highly recommend a book "Teaming with Microbes " written by Jeff Lowenfels & Wayne Lewis. Even if you don't use there approach to gardening there is some good info. I currently have two raised beds 3' x 8' that are not getting any chemical fertilizers. So far everything is doing well. I will try to post a few photos soon. Didn't mean to take up so much time, but I am excited about this approach to gardening. Again, Thanks for the warm welcome.

Re: VIDEO GARDEN TOUR - Update

Post  Kelejan on 12/9/2014, 12:18 am

Good to hear from you, Jerry552. We have something in common.  I also had Mel's first book (1984 I think) and that is what inspired me some 25 years later when I took it off my bookshelf and started SFG.
Luckily the day before I started to dig up the lawn, I went on to the Internet to see if there was anything there  and discovered that all I had to do was lay the stuff on top of the lawn, no digging.  Saved me a lot of hard work.
Look forward to more of your progress.  I am a little north of you in British Columbia, Canada.
