December 2014 in Western Mountains & High Plains

Post  Turan on 12/2/2014, 12:40 pm

It is above zero this morning!  I am still in my wimp stage of adjusting to winter.  And I am still grumbling about all the things I did not get done before that storm shut the garden down.
How are you coping and what are you doing?

So to think positively here is my windowsill planter of greens, still in the micro greens stage~

I will start thinning them soon to sprinkle on salads and soups.  Maybe I will have fresh salad to serve for Christmas.
I planted another such planter with hyacinth bulbs and red chard.  It is in the unheated mud room so that the bulbs will get enough cold to bloom by February.  I figure the chard will show up when it chooses.  The room never quite freezes but gets into the 30s.

Here is our citrus tree.  We use it as our living Christmas tree.  It is nice having something so green in the house when it is white outside.

I hope ya'all had a lovely Thanksgiving feast with some of hte fruits of your summer labors included.  We had winter squash soup and a tomato salad.

Thanks.  O yes, we decorate it Smile
The tree came from a seed my then 2yo son planted from a lemon or orange.  The fruit came from his gr grandma's yard out side of Madera, near you Very Happy
It has never bloomed, I think it needs more winter light.  We do use leaves in Thai curry sometimes.
