I'm kinda excited!

Post  martha on 12/3/2014, 3:05 pm

As I have been talking about, my husband and I sold our restaurant, which is where I did my gardening.

While we owned our restaurant, we sold our house, since maintaining a house while working 70 hours a week didn't go together that well. We love where we live, the landlord lives right across the street, we don't have to mow or plow, but the one downside is there is no place to garden.

My friend, as I have also mentioned, insisted on moving pretty much my entire garden - raspberries, strawberries, SFG boxes, Mel's mix, greenhouse and compost to her house. She lives close to me, and I have enjoyed going over there, planting the raspberries and strawberries (and getting poison ivy Evil or Very Mad ), but I don't know what I am going to do next for work, so it may or may not work out to continue gardening at her house. Plus, I am worried about the in-ground plants, since her yard is lots and lots of clay and rocks.

ANYWAY, long story short, I have moved the herbs to my house to live in the basement. I can't have any plants upstairs because our three cats are evil, and we can't have nice things!

But, the basement is dry, not too cold, it doesn't make me sneeze - huge plus!  I rigged up my grow lights on a timer and as I was puttering around down there, I noticed the two fans, that are stand-up fans where you can adjust the height - and I realized that I can start seedlings down there, to plant at my friend's house! I used to take my seedlings out to the patio every day, at the restaurant, thus hardening them off from the time they were babies. I can take them outside sometimes, but I don't have to do it every day, and they can still learn how to be tough little buggers!

I'm not giving up gardening, just because I don't have any place to do it! I'm a happy woman!

Great photo. Did you use the veggies at the restaurant besides your personal consumption?

Oh, yes! In fact, the reason I grew so many tomatoes, and so many strawberries, and soooo many raspberries, is because the first year of the restaurant, and the garden, every time my husband caught me eating one of the tomatoes, while I was harvesting, he would say "Hey! Cut it out! Those are for the guests!" And I would say, "But I grew them!" and he would say "But I need to cook with them!"

So, 60 tomato plants a year later…..Razz

Typically, we would have enough cherry tomatoes for salads, enough mid-sized tomatoes for caprese salads, or BLT salad- homegrown lettuce and tomatoes, with pancetta, and plenty for snacking. DH went to a cheese making class this past summer. We would have made caprese salads with homemade mozzarella, but the class was too late in the summer, and his first few batches were good, but not good enough.

I had enough rosemary to use as skewers for grilled shrimp or scallops for specials several times throughout the summer, enough garlic for tzatziki which was on the menu all summer, enough basil for everything except pesto, enough sage, thyme, marjoram and oregano for everything.

We had stuffed squash  blossoms, with zucchini and summer squash blossoms. Butternut squash raviolis, lemon verbena to make all kinds of wonderful things, op0---q1

LOVE your assistant! He looks really stressed out on his fuzzy blanket. Very Happy

Your restaurant sounds so neat. I'm afraid that without the on-site garden, the new owner will not be able to match your menu.

And what's great about his fuzzy blanket is that it is the dog we used to have!

Manny. His brother is Pedro. As in baseball/former Red Sox.

When I put sox and soxes in my updated Word 7, the soxes was underlined in red but I cannot find my spell checker. Help!

I think the plural of sox is sox.  A bit like sheep.

SOX is just a cutsey way of spelling socks which is the plural of sock, so sox is plural alaready.

Darn! Soxes would be such a good Scrabble word! Of course, one would have to convince the other people playing that Sox or Soxes wasn't a proper noun, which might be a tough sell!
