Greetings from Cajun Country in South Louisiana

Post  Cajun Cappy on 12/6/2014, 12:16 pm

Greetings, I am an ole Cajun Country boy and I live work and play in the extreme south.  We have been doing our style of square foot gardening inspired by Mel for many years.  although our yard is less than 1 acre we have jungled it up with trees and several garden boxes.  I look forwards to sharing our trials and learning from yours.  WE are beginning to think about future gardening boxes as I near retirement and we love planning and experimenting, we will be looking for tips.  In the mean time if you are interested you can look back over several years of our blog to get an idea of who, where and what we do.  I look forwards to a fun filled future with you guys.

glad you\'re here cappy.  I am in Canada but I am allowed to welcome you before the Official Host for your area wakes up. Very Happy
Now I am retired and am enjoying having the time to garden, something I seldom ever had time for before.  Now we face our long winter in Canada so I am on this forum a bit more than I should be , I guess. I can always say I am planning for next season, meanwhile looking at all the lovely pictures our friends to the south of us post here.

Yea, I'd say you are a little north of me.  Recently me and Peggy loaded up our camper and headed due north 1500 miles and we were still in the US.  We camped on the south shore of lake Ontario.  This is my favorite time of the year, when I can brag to all my snow bird friends about walking out bare footed in a tee shirt in the morning and picking fresh citrus from our trees for breakfast like I did today. Cool

I really do not like you Very Happy
I'm kidding.  Each area has its pros and cons.  For me, having winter means that I appreciate the rest of the year even more.
Some years ago I caught a Greyhound bus and spent four days travelling to San Antonio and I really enjoyed the 72F weather there in April/May. then I had to travel another four days to get back to Canada.  When one travels across the USA and Canada, you realize what big place this is.  I was born and raised in England. Different, to say the least.

Sadly it will be a week before they let me post links. This cramps my style somewhat as I often refer to the annals of our blog as a quick way to back up what I am saying.  The link is currently under my avatar as a little circle if you click the little icon it will take ya there.  Once I can start posting pics and links to our blog and you tubes I will be better able to answer questions and offer examples of our wonderful semi tropical environment

I really hope so Marie, we are simple country folks and not very garden geeky.  We tend to rely on the wisdom of the old timers in town since this is an agricultural area down in sugar cane country.  I no longer call our garden beds square footers instead raised beds, over the years both us and Mel has changed from the original plan.  We now do our different version.  We hope not to ruffle any purist feathers but down here in Cajun country gardening is kinda different.

Cappy, on my computer monitor it only showed a white background with yellowy shadows, but when I used full screen it came up clear.
I hope your arm is not too sore with those blankety-blank lemon prickles..

Here we get lemons on special at 3 for $2.00 if we are lucky. Heaven knows what they have to pay up in the Far North. Get them there and you  would make a fortune, except for air freight.

God has a way of providing something for every body.  Here citrus is here plentiful and free for the growing.  Apples are another story however and are quite expensive and no where the quality you guys get.

What we should do is eat the abundance of local produce in season and enjoy a little of everything else as a treat. That way you eat good food and have something extra to enjoy.
I really cannot think of the first time I ever ate a banana. I was probably about 12 years of age.
I particularly never eat strawberries now from the grocery store.  Now I only eat them in season from my own garden.

We try to live the simple country life we grow alot of what we eat and trade neighbors for other things and go in halfs with some.  My friend grows a huge tomato crop.  He grows and picks and sorts them and gives them to us.  We blanch peel and can several different ways and give him back half.  This year we both got 30 qts of tomatoes some plain some stewed and some in my Cajun spicy recipe.  just an example of how we roll. Very Happy
