When do seeds show up in your local stores?

Post  dk54321 on 12/24/2014, 12:02 pm

I took a peek today (I must be crazy, shopping on Christmas Eve) but nothing yet!

I live in New Hampshire and seeds show up in the stores in late February? Absolutely in March.

Over this side of then pond unlike in previous years , it seems that the garden centers & shops  have not removed the seed stocks this year. Everything is still available so long as the use  before date is still valid .
Prices haven't reduced to clearance prices either .

I've noticed that the packets are now showing date packed but no longer the date the seeds were harvested , they are also showing the use by year ending .

Knowing how well some seeds  easily store it seems that lots of seeds are a couple of years old if the use by date is anything to go by .
The seeds that are packed in foil packs with a nitrogen gas fill are able to germinate a long time after harvesting of the seeds so long as the packet is unopened . Once opened it is normal retention times.

I noticed seeds were still available at Home depot but not Lowes and Walmart before I left in late Oct.  We have 1 nursery in town that keeps seeds all year until the new crop comes in.  They don't restock what sells out but the do keep a good stock of cool weather crops.  I think new stock started arriving mid to late Jan last year.

I'm thinking of winter sowing for 2015, and I have some seeds, but not all.

Our HD, Lowers, OSH still have 2014 seeds. I should check and see if they are having any 50% off sales. CA has more year around gardening.

Not sure but think it's around February.  Found a local hardware store that caries SSE seeds and hope they get them early too.
