Congratulations! salute Question, is that red native soil, well, as nasty as it looks? SFG beds sure solve soil problems.

Congrats!

And for a plumbing dope -- can you tell me what those valves are for? I've seen those near control boxes, but not directly in a bed like that.

Marc, It's preparation for the Aquajet irrigation system. I used that system in my SFG beds.

It's allow me to turn off the water to that specific SFG bed if I'm not using it or when the plants are dying. this prevent water waste or over watering in some cases. that occurred twice with my tomatoes.

Wow!  Very impressive has55.  I did not know that parts of TX are plagued with clay just like GA.  You have my complete sympathy on that.  Congrats on your new babies.  I'm sure they will very fruitful.

I watched a lot of videos from your link for the Aquajet irrigation system.  It really looks like a good system.  How is it working for you.

it works great in the yard. it a learning curve in SFG bed, due to mel mix not holding the water quickly. it was great in the spring, but when the summer came the soil just let the water go down to the ground. I had to increase the water holding power with coco coir. that solve the problem and now the worms and micros has changed the soil even more causing it to have great water holding power. since it water underground weeds haven't been a problem. but there is a learning curve rather it in the yard or SFG bed. you have to learn  and accept you cant see the water working(faith). you have to wait to you see the grass change. set the timer for 2 mins, etc...It  has no problem in natural soil in the yard because the soil is tight, compacted, so the water doesn't go down, but upwards.

I am learning the value of mulch.  I started out watering in the spring and then found I could not keep up so everything did not do too well again until the fall.  This year I am mulching.

All my beds have the MM formula plus 1 bale of coco coir to each 4 x 4 bed. I don;t have any bed using cox coir as the only media, instead of peat moss. I just had to modified. plus the mulched took it to another level as mention above. i will do the same with these beds, except I'm going to dig 1 ft down instead of adding height. then add leaves, manure etc... into the one foot hole for the worms and any roots that can get that far down, like my swiss chard. there will be a banquet waiting for them.

on the aquajet this may be helpful.

working on underground composting beneath my MM for the future. dug out another foot for better temp control, water savings and continuation of composting for the worms and microbes.

these two beds are waiting for the Master Gardener to come from the Mothership. They're saying feed me, feed me. Put something inside please.

Made a run to four Starbuck. That bag to my farthest left was very heavy. My back made me pay attention after I got it home.

It's been raining today. so some water got in the bed. I told the digger yesterday not to slip and fall in. somebody might cover him up.Twisted EvilSmile
