making ice cream sundaes!

Post  jille on 5/4/2010, 4:27 pm

Hi
This past weekend my children and I made and planted our first square foot garden.
I bought a raised garden kit from Lee Valley because I needed the height (ouch my knees). My 6 year old son and I cut the lumber with a miter box and hand saw. I did not want to even attempt using a power saw with a very 'busy' little boy watching! We assembled the bed, filled it half way with sand and large rocks then recruited my eight year old daughter to help mix up the Mel's mix! I measured and poured the three ingrediants onto the tarp. My daughter jumped right in and started mixing - up to her arm pits! She was so excited to play in the dirt. She said she was having lots of fun because it reminded her of an ice cream sundae. The compost was the dark chocolate fudge, the peat moss was the milk chocolate and the vermiculite was the caramel! Yummy! We made 4 batches of icecream sundae topping and by the final batch we had lots of help from the neighbourhood kids who wanted to help mix up the sundaes!
Later, after a spring shower, we planted the peas, beans, carrots, beets, radishes and strawberries. We can't wait to try the veggies grown in sundae toppings!
