Finding components for Mels Mix is an adventure

Post  Judy McConnell on 1/28/2015, 11:41 am

AND I'm having fun doing it Very Happy Very Happy

As I click off one more source of an ingredient for the compost part, I almost cheer.
Black Kow (check); Chickity-doo-doo (check); rabbit poo (on hand); leaf mold (on hand; and for the 5th= 1/2 alfalfa meal (if I can find organic), 1/4 crab shell, 1/4 fish meal and/or worm castings

Wish the feed/seed store and the box stores would get their NEW supplies - don't "they" realize that promises to have ingredient X soon is NOT the same as my having bags of it on hand. Evil or Very Mad

Found a source for coarse vermic. near my "farm" in SW VA. so the next time, I get there will pick up several bags (another check). Peat shouldn't be difficult to locate "I hope"

My boxes and TTs are ready to be assembled - the weather is holding me back - hurry up spring!! Rolling Eyes

Am I anxious to get started?  Of course, I am.

Maybe starting some seeds next month or March might help to give me the feeling of getting my fingernails "dirty"

Judy
Last year I came across a farm supply shop some where in the Charlottesville area.
Not located close to any large town it is run by a family.
They indicate selling the true large vermiculite in 4 cubic foot bags.
They said it was larger than course V. and the best for SFG.
It was a larger outfit with many other offerings...
Maybe worth you trying to locate it,
I regret not saving a link, however I'll try again to locate it.

Jimmy - Thanks for thinking of me  but
I did a quick search of C'ville area and did find vermiculite at a couple.  BUT and this is big - price was double for what I will pay as Seven Springs in Check, VA
http://www.7springsfarm.com/   -( yes, this is in the vermic. database).

Besides, I need to go down to check on the house - bad weather and all that.

Judy, Did you check hydroponic stores? It's 'interesting' if nothing else. Bat guano, kelp meal, worm castings, molasses.

Yes, Sanderson - there are a couple - one in downtown D.C. and another couple in Maryland. I didn't realize that these stores catered to pot growers (illegal here).

Also cater. Illegal growers use secluded wooded areas or grow indoors. Hence the elaborate indoor hydroponics supplies.

They also grow in underground chambers.

I found vermiculite cheap from a local pool company. If they carry the vermiculite that is NOT already mixed with cement, it's a little smaller than what MM suggests, but so much more affordable.  They use it to gunnite pool walls but it usually comes in large bags that I bought for under $18 each.

I found course vermiculite at my local lumber yard in the insulation department. The price was good.

Holy Banana peels - I was hoping to buy enough ingredients to make MM for my new beds because I don't have enough ready compost.

My plans were to buy enough materials to make 32 ft3 of MM - enough for the beds and a bit left over.  Well after checking prices for the ingredients that I wanted - there is NO way that I can afford to make 32 cubic feet before planting season.  The vermiculite alone would be $156.00 for 8 - 3.5 cu ft bags (@19.50/ bag).

Shipping for a couple of goodies seems more than the goodies would cost alone so I decided to stay local. Northern VA is expensive so I expanded my hunt to SW VA and am finding a bit lower prices.  Even with this help, it looks like 16 cu ft will be my "new" limit for this year.

Whimper and whine over!

Judy, that is why I typically use the BM products or sphagnum and perlite  to fill out any compost I may have. Compost is the most important ingredient in any case.

You maybe able to touch base with this horticultural distributor to find vermiculite, peat and some other ingredients for your SFG. They have a warehouse in Harrisonburg, VA.

Camprn and PVPind - many thanks for the info that you have provided - I'll do more "hunting" after I get over the shock of prices.

PVPind - I go right through H'burg when I visit my homeplace, so let's hope they might sell in smaller quantities.

After calculating the costs of raw materials for MM,  I discovered that Veteran's Compost in MD would save me about $300 by buying their ready-made Sq Ft mix.  Kim and others say it's great and the savings make so much more sense, unless there is a delivery charge involved to one of their pu points in MD.

I believe they have a pickup point in Arlington.  Check with them.  Unless that is why they are advertising for a truck driver. Razz   I will be visiting my daughter in NOVA later this spring and am thinking about getting my truck loaded.  Wouldn't make a special trip, but if I'm going anyway.  I will be relocating my entire operations to Wilmington, NC in Mar or Apr. and it may be easier to leave my depleted mix in Elizabeth City and get all new.    My son bought his own house so I can get mine back.  LOL

I am very happy Very Happy.  Made contact with Veterans compost and a rep will deliver my order next Sunday at American University, with no delivery charge (special Feb offer).

AU is fairly easy to get to and on Sunday - NO commuters! rock on

Lucky you, Aberdeen  is quite a haul away.   I have had good success with Veteran Compost, so best of luck this year!
