38 Hours & counting

Post  AtlantaMarie on 2/18/2015, 9:44 am

Hi all.  Just a quick note that the power is out at our place.  Not sure when we'll get it back.  Expecting fairly high kinds his afternoon, which will bring down a lot more trees...

Thank God for a smart DH who know how to connect generators to the house.  Not enough power to run computer, but we have heat.

Will b back once we're up & running.

HA!  Knew that would take care of it.  Apparently just as I was hitting send, they got the power back up & running.

Apparently we're the only ones in our subdivision who has a generator... Shocked

A generator is a nice thing to have when the power goes out during extreme temps. Enough to run the refrig, a 100 watt bulb and a space heater or fan.

That's got to be miserable, especially if you're not prepared.  Glad you are safe.

We have buried electrical lines in our area; but there's always a possibility of losing a "big" line somewhere I guess.  Longest we've been without in the five years we've been here is four hours - when someone hit a sub-station with their car.  Didn't even lose power after a micro-burst took down a third of the trees in about a one-mile radius.  Looked like a war zone...but still had power.

Wow, Slimbolen, that's nice...

We also have buried lines, but our county was one of the hardest hit, apparently.  Trees & limbs down everywhere.  I called in about 10 minutes after it went out and was told that "11,792 homes are currently without power."  It ended up much worse than that between ALL of the EMC's and GA Power - something like 188k+.

The generator we have can run the fridge, chest freezer, the thermostat to turn on the heat pump (on emergency/gas mode), several lights and the tv.  But we keep as many lights off as reasonable.

We've had it set up now for about 10 years.  This is the 1st year we've lost power for longer than a few seconds since we installed it, lol.  Glad to know it works!

Been a strange day - intermittent sun & wind.  Wind's picking up now (AGAIN).  If the sun's out, the trees look like silver glitter.  We've also had 3 snow showers so far.  But the temp's up to 37, so stuff's melting.  Yea!

Down south of you we did not get hit with icing on the trees, but the cold is unbearable to this lover of the Florida Keys type weather.  The high tomorrow is going to be 28*F.  I am going to have to wear my long underwear to work tomorrow.  bah humbug.

Marie, What size is your generator? I don't know what the units are but DH will.

Keep safe! I always love it/hate it when the power's out. We really enjoy the down time but not being able to get on the internet makes me uneasy since my entire business life is on the net!!! Glad you can keep warm Smile

We never got the snow to the kids disappointment and no ice either like north Atlanta did. What we did get is the wind and the cold. The wind was howling so loud last night my boys woke up scared. We are siting at 16 degrees Fahrenheit right now. We have a generator as well but haven't had to use it yet. Hope everyone stays warm.

It's 5000 watt.

Mschaef - it was 13 here when I got up, but don't remember any wind after I went to bed.  Of course, I've been told that I could sleep thru a nuclear bomb... Wink

Hope you don't have to use that generator!

Well, the poor folks in our area who are still without power are supposed to get it back by this afternoon sometime...

Just in time for another possible ice storm tonight/tomorrow.

Nopale

I'd rather have the snow.
