Kathy,  I think your garden looks fantastic for the heat you have had.  You may get bigger production when the weather mellows out.  Everything looks so healthy and I think part of the reason is because you nicely mulched.

Just wanted to show you guys what I harvested today. I have been out of town for 2 weeks and DH has been in charge. Luckily we had rain (NEVER happens in summer in So Cal!). Peppers and tomatoes (a few with end blossom rot). Just wish my squash would do something:roll:

The lumpy ones are Purple Cherokee - the ones you said were "Cat-facing" - and yes they are, but they still taste good!

I can't wait for my peppers and tomatoes.. I have had a few cherry tomatoes, just as a fun bite while getting squash, etc. They were delish! Pole beans just starting here....will take a week or 2 to get a mess.

I haven't posted because it has been HOT and humid and I spend little of my off time in the garden. I am still very happy that I started SFG because I got SO much more than I have in the past. Pluses - tomatoes, lots and lots - still coming even though they have slowed down some. Peppers and eggplant seem to love the heat. I am so sad that I can no longer seem to grow squash, which I used to have to give away - my favorite fruit is zucchini!! Zinnias are doing well. Thinking about planting for fall, but not sure that October will be cool enough so don't exactly know when to start my plants. Anyway, these are the only pictures I have and I want to keep this thread going so I can learn from 1) you guys and 2) my mistakes.

Nice, Kathy! I have had the same experience as you, more than I thought possible out of these little boxes!

I never gave it a thought to use my original post line as a learning tool. albino

I've kind of used the No Cal thread the same way. Do you want the name changed to MomVet - My first Square Foot Garden?

That would be great. I have pulled out everything but zinnias, peppers, tomatoes and eggplants (well, I have chives and parsley in there, too). Planted broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, two kinds of cabbage and celery indoors. Just an experiment but I plan to put them out at the end of October along with kale, lettuce, arugula, swiss chard, pal choy, garlic, beets, turnips, peas, sweet peas and Icelandic poppies. Will see what happens. It's like a science experiment and I love science!

Starting Over

Post  momvet on 5/13/2016, 5:38 pm

Not long after my last post, we lost our beloved son in law while he was trekking Mt. Kilimanjaro with our daughter. She was physically fine but we are still devastated by his loss. He was 33 years old. I pretty much lost my passion for awhile and the garden shriveled. I planted my first winter garden and got some peas and broccoli but not much else. I am trying very hard to rediscover my passion and even though I am just now planted (late for here), I know I will benefit from your encouragement and support. Thanks.Sad

Dear Kathy, I am so sorry for your family's loss.

What parts of the garden gave you the most joy?
I am sure Mr T would appreciate it if you grew him some nasturtiums.
Focus on your joy and what works this late in the season.  Remember to add compost to replenish the soil.

Welcome back,
Turan

Missed you, Kathy, oh my God, what a tragedy for you and your family, especially your daughter. I am so sorry, words just do not express my depth of feeling for you and yours.

I think that as you get your hands into the soil again, you may find a spiritual peace that comes from nurturing. I find a lot of comfort in just doing. Know that you have been missed here, and your garden awaits. I love you
