March 2015 in Western Mountains & High Plains

Post  Turan on 3/12/2015, 11:19 pm

So what is every one doing?

I am totally behind already.  I got to get my peppers started.  Here I have been wanting to plant them and holding back for 2 months and now I am struggling to get moving.  Hopefully tomorrow!

I went over the garden plan with my DH and DS, the major consumers.  They agree, fewer tomatoes and lots of peppers.

The ground is mostly thawed.  We had a cold snap that froze solid my compost piles but they are thawing again.  Lambing is almost done soon it will be time to clean barn and chicken coops.

I am still eating lettuce from the box I started last fall.  I must remember to that again.

I know every one else must be way ahead of me.  Get me motivated!  Laughing

Just writing appears motivating.  I got the peppers seeded today in soil blocks.  4 each of Syrian 3 sided, Hungarian Hot wax, and Krimson Lee.

Here are some lamb pictures.

Mama with triplets born this morning.  They get some time in the jug bonding and getting nursing figured out for certain.  The straw in here goes into my garden compost pile.

Thanks for the lamb photos. Do you use the lambing straw in your compost?

I just came in from chores.  That mama's lambs are with full round bellies.  She is an amazing mama.  I gave her some alfalfa pellets.  I do not as a rule feed grain to sheep.

Yes, the jug cleanings are good compost material.  I worry about the 2,4-D they spray on the grain fields here but it seems to be breaking down in the compost pile.  I use that compost pile to grow squash in this summer.  It will not go out on the beds until next year.

SPRING IS HERE!

Post  Turan on 3/24/2015, 12:49 pm

I celebrated the first day of spring by turning/rebuilding 3 compost piles.  There is some heat in them now.  There are annual weeds popping up in the greenhouse but not in the garden beds yet.  I am contemplating planting some lettuce in the greenhouse.

Most of the peppers are up so I started the tomatoes.  I have never started them so early.  Next up will be the broccoli and some bokchoy.
