2015 plan for my garden

Post  Eric Lingo on 3/13/2015, 2:57 pm

this year I have ALL of my beds up and running..6 4x8 beds with native soil with some compost mixed in
then my awesome 4x4 MMs beds with weed cloth down

one of the ideas I was thinking of doing and wanting some input is doing some companion planting I recently picked up A Beginners Guide to Companion Planting: Companion Gardening with Flowers, Herbs & Vegetables by Mel Jeffreys.

some of the questions I have in this is..do you plant the companions at the same time or spread their planting times out cuase there are some combos that germ/harvest way faster then their companions and I am kinda afraid the faster plant over shadowing the slower plant..case in point cabbage with celery. I had an awesome winter cabbage harvest and I am wanting to do a early summer harvest before it gets to hot.

now as for temps is there a good listing somewhere I can look at on whats good in heat bad in heat good in cold bad in cold I see planting times but I wana try and plan their harvest time in the ideal times..

also I wana try some of the herb/flower companion stuff aswell like marigolds and dill and such

Eric, I've been away from computer, running errands, etc., plus I was hoping someone else would answer your questions about companion planting. Very Happy We both live where something can be grown all year around. Companion planting (except for flowers) seems too complicated for what I want to do. I have come to the point (after a whopping 24 months of gardening!) that I will have basically 2 crops, March-Sept, and Oct-March, with some overlap. Summer flowers set out the same time as summer crops, winter flowers set out with winter crops.

Winter: cole crops, chard, snow peas, lettuce with Pansy, snapdragon, carnation, etc.
Summer: beans, tomatoes, peppers, etc. with petunia, zinnia, sunflower, etc.

I made an elaborate companion and enemy Excel chart. Haven't looked at it since! Embarassed I just picture how big something will grow and plant something that fits next to it.

These posts have really helped me. I think it just changes the idea of simplicity of SFG if I overthink it and since I am in area where I can pretty much grow year round, I think I will follow sanderson's advice. Our zones are close and I think it will work.

One of the things about SFG is that it doesn't have to be boring like, say, row gardening. There is always something that can be changed, decorated, attempted, copied, raised, angled, moved, etc.

That's fair. If you want it enough, the seller should not lose out.

LOL, just not sure I can afford you, Eric!

Airfare, 55 miles from the airport, lodging...  And I'm guessing you'd want to eat while you're here too...?

Wink

Too bad - I could use you this morning.  Probly DH could too.  We put a new bed in yesterday to keep folks from parking & running over our water meter.  So stiff & sore.
