Black Diamond watermelon

Post  Eric Lingo on 3/23/2015, 3:18 pm

ok I am going to be growing black diamond watermelon this spring they avrage 30-50lb melons with the upper limits in the 125lbs range

so my question is trellis..slings..ground..or what?

last year I did crimson and I left them on the ground..just put a steping stone underneath fruit to keep them from direct contact with the ground

this planting I am wanting to try and maybe do a trellis..but my concern is with this variety would a trellis be the way to go and just be cautious of the fruit by supporting it in some way

This is not an ideal variety for SFG. If you want to trellis the melons, choose a different variety. You will have better results with traditional cultivation of the Black Diamond watermelon.

125 lb. watermelon?

golly gee whiz

Even if you did build an extra-sturdy trellis, and figured out a sling, you'd still face the problem of getting the melon to the ground in one piece without hurting yourself.

I'd put this guy on the ground, and find another type of melon or squash to grow on a trellis.

I am a big guy..so IF it actualy grows to be 100+ lbs..it wont effect me all that much on moving it..I am more concerned with it ripping off the vine..or other weighted issues like that

and ya Camprn its going in a non SFG bed

Hay bale.

I'll be doing Carolina Cross #183 this year, which can top out over 200lbs.
