SPRING!!!!

Post  FRED58 on 3/26/2015, 7:49 pm

I can't remember who it was that told me this, it may have been my grandpa, it may have been my Scout master. Robins mean nothing in the spring. They are happy to live on leftover seeds from last fall for weeks. The true harbinger of spring (at least around here) is the redwing blackbird. They prefer insects for most of their diet, so when they show up there are insects (and spring!). I saw them in large numbers driving east this weekend. I can hear them calling in the marsh just to the north. So spring has arrived on the shores of Lake Huron.

The snow started as I sat down to write this.

(heavy sigh)

So, what is YOUR surefire sign of Spring?

Early crocus and miniature daffodils showing their flowers and the warm days when you can work in your garden - even if those days are followed by 30 degree-ers.

I know that Calif. has swallows returning in the spring but here the surefire guarantee of spring is the return of the buzzards. Rolling Eyes Haven't seen one yet.

My cat starts going outside & takes off rather than rushing back in after 5 seconds. Laughing

Some one mentioned Robins and I hadda grin.  They winter here so maybe them leaving means spring??  Any ways yall have seen me refer to this else where.  It's official when Mr. Pecan starts budding.  Here is an interesting observation too.  Old pecan trees bud later than young ones.  I get this just from observation and its just a theory I have based on observation but seems to be true.  I cant help but wonder if they learn this over time.  Could be Razz  Maybe I should apply for a research grant.  Lord knows sillier things have been studied with our tax money.

That is a major sign. Reminds me that my seeds need to be in.
