trellis square foot gardenning 3/27/2015

Post  superjono on 3/27/2015, 10:04 pm

Hello my name is Jonathan I am in TX. zone 8a. I have been gardening for 10 years and am always taking my own notes each year. Besides using Miracle Gro potting mix here and there in my garden, I consider my gardening practices organic and GMO free. I only fertilize with KELP/FISH EMULSION/CRAB SHELL MEAL/CHICKEN POOP. Utilizing space is as much a challenge as raising seedlings to fruiting plants. I planted 3 cucumber (Eureka hybrid.), 3 CASHAW PUMPKIN, 3 Birdhouse gourds, 3 SCARLET RUNNER BEANS
Seeds (4 seeds per planting "will thin seedlings to 1 plant in each planting") are planted 1ft from each-other in MG potting mix 1in deep, next to a 10ft HIGH BY 20FT WIDE sturdy metal trellis. This is the first year to plant this method on a trellis. Any pointer please? Disease/pest/spacing?

Superjono,  Do you use the row gardening method?  I ask because you use Miracle Gro potting mix, which is not used in square foot gardening.

You have a nice sized trellis.  If it was on a SFG garden, you could trellis 40 cucumbers (at 2 per square), or 20 winter squash or cantaloups (1 per square), or 160 pole beans or peas (8 per square).

Hi Sanderson, I don't think so. I just assumed I was planting a SFG because every plant is planted 1ft apart from each-other. What is recommended to use as a medium? Also I can only plant on one side of my trellis because my munchkins will bother every seed I planted. I really hope the birdhouse gourd vines produce awesome birdhouse gourds, because that would make awesome projects to do with the kids.

:welcome:superjono happy hi from Kelejan in Canada. (Big place Canada)

It looks as though you have not read the Square Foot Gardening book that shows you how we make something called Mel's Mix shortened to MM?

Apart from being in one foot squares the MM medium is the basis of of SFG.  MM is not soil as it consist of vermiculite, peat and compost in equal measure.

If you go the the Search box at the top left hand corner of this page and enter MM
your should get lots of information to read.  If MM does not work then enter Mel's Mix.

I am going to the Search box right now to make sure I have given you the right information.  BRB

Well, much to my surprie nothing happened. Must look further.  BRB hopefully. Very Happy

Superjono,  Go to the Home page and you will see little bubbles along the left side.  The first topic is Mel's Mix.

Yes, strongly recommend that you read the book, All New Square Foot Gardening, 1st or 2nd Edition, by Mel Bartholomew. study  It will totally change your view of gardening. thinking  You can even built kiddie gardens 3' x 3'.  Let them go crazy in their own box(es), plant their own seeds, even small varieties of watermelon and little carrots.  The book also answers lots of questions like plant spacing.

Square Foot Gardening really, really works.  We love to help a Newbie get started with their SFG. Very Happy

Hi Superjono.  Welcome from Atlanta, GA!  Glad you've joined us.

Gotta agree with what Sanderson & Kelejan have said.  I was a rather unsuccessful row gardener.  SFG is SO much better!

Typically Miracle-gro will be exhausted of nutrients in 6-8 weeks. This is by design to get the consumer to buy more product, namely fertilizer.

The name of the game with SFG, besides the intensive planting pethod, is using good quality compost to feed the growing medium, which in turn feeds the plants.

Go to the forum home page and put your curser to the left of the screen. There you will find a pop out with some good threads about SFG.

Did I read correctly or did you miss type?  Seeds planted in 1 inch of planting mix? SFG only uses 6 inches of MM and even then some row gardeners claim it will not work. (it does because of the well blended nutrients in our compost)

Most of us will not use Miracle-Gro because of the synthetic fertilizers it contains, but it has been a help when a quick boost is needed in certain instances.  If you have a Lowes or Home Depot in town, pick up a copy of the All New Square Foot Gardening book and leaf through it.   If it interests you, buy a copy and you will be amazed at the ease it has brought to gardening.  I think you are already half way there by reading your list a fertilizers.

BTW, trellising is a tried and true SFG way of expanding our gardening yields so you are definately on  track with utilizing it.

Kay
