Marc, I don't know about affecting the house at this point, but it makes this little area feel much better. I even tested the shaded bricks by walking barefoot. What a difference!!! No lizard dance. I want to extend the shade further to the West. (Porch is east)

That's how it is at my house. Lilly can go in but I'm behind the mower. But this just reminded me that I have a reel mower somewhere in the back of the garage gathering cobwebs. Guess I could pull that out!

With the rising temps scorching the tops of my tomatoes, I decided to follow Sanderson's lead and erected two of those 75% tan shade structures over them. I noticed that two of the 6 tomatoes that I bought from "Tortured Supply Hardware" turned out to be mislabeled (AGAIN Evil or Very Mad ). AmI ever going to learn?. The Beefsteaks are regulation billiard ball size and the Amish Paste turned out to be a rather nice, plump Brandywine. I usually order the seeds and start my own, but I wanted to get a jump on the harvest season before the oppressive heat sets here and bought early from their nursery. I forgot how some folks aren't too particular about which plant they return those cute plastic ID stakes to. Oh well, win some, lose some.

How do you like the the 75% shades? I want to put up more for general comfort!! I don't even have to buy plants that are mislabeled, I can do that all on my own. Razz

I think The 75% shade are great (Do these shades make my SFG beds look bigger? cheers ). So Far there's been no sign of wilted plants between the hours of 12 pm-4 pm.  The only concern I have now is how they'll act in the wind. So far they are OK an winds up to 12 knots.

California drought

Drones!! We are really courting trouble!!  Crap flying all over!  Amazon is going to send packages by them.  Everyone and his brother sending them up into our spaces.  Idiocy!!

Clarification: The cars burned because the highway had been restricted to just those lanes during construction. The people had to abandon their vehicles and escape on foot.

Cars burned, yeah, because the guy in front of the line bailed, blocking the guys behind him(her). The tow truck operators swooped in like buzzards on carrion- dollar signs in their beady eyes. News is a money maker and drones are one way of getting your one minute of fame on the evening broadcasts. To me, drone operators are just like storm chasers only they are jeopardizing the public instead of themselves.  The hobby industry is fanning the flames by offering Quad copters equipped with remote cameras and video at affordable prices. They don't need much room to operate, and , unlike conventional Rc airplanes, trackhomers can operate them in a confined area (even a living room). Drone control, self control.

Similar problem here in British Columbia.  Planes had to stop flying and let the fires burn because of the danger of drones.

Unintended consequences....

Probably the FAA should bring drones under its jurisdiction and develop guidelines for their use--restrictions under certain conditions.

Except within city limits I guess, I have zero problem with people shooting them out of the sky. I don't want some creep spying on me in my backyard. You gotta pay money if you want to see my glory, baby!

Last Saturday evening, we were 15 minutes out from home after visiting kiddies in Sacramento, when Ken woke me up  sawing logs  and said, "Is that smoke?"  As the minutes passed, you could see a small pillar develop into a rapidly spreading mass of smoke.  That was the start of the Bass Lake fire.  This is the time of the year when CA burns.  How about folks in other dry states?  Any nasty fires where you are?

Oregon is pretty much same like California in that way. We've got some huge fires going on right now, and the smoke even from very far away is thick enough to look like low-hanging morning fog today. Yesterday there was less of it and it made the sky yellow. It gives some people asthma attacks, even severe ones. I didn't run the dogs today and kept the windows closed.

My visit to Vancouver-Portland was very enjoyable.  The Columbia River is awesome and I can only picture two 3' pipelines parallel to I-5 to California.  Sigh.  The difference between the west and the east can be imagined from these 2 photos of the Columbia.  This is from Hood River at the famous hotel/venue where the wedding was held, about a short hour from Portland.  This section of Highway 84 has some nice waterfalls.

This photo was taken from Highway 84 near The Dalles.  The area is dry.  The photos are hazy and I wonder if it is from the fires.  ??  The island is a historical site - an Indian burial island with a partially submerged headstone of a white man who wanted to be buried there.  Sorry, I don't have the info.  I had to whine to get everyone to drive the extra 30 minutes east to see this drier area.
