Woke up to everything pretty soaked so I don't know how long it's been raining but it's a good steady rain that's not going to gully wash anything yet.  We really need this kind of rain so it soaks in an refreshes our wells instead of just running off.

We've got a lot of catching up to do to replenish our aquifers. My Garden seems to be handling it fine, but my dog isn't adjusting to the rain very well. For one thing , she refuses to go do her thing in the rain, so we had to improvise and lay a strip of sod down in the garage- it's working! Now all we have to do is get her used to the sound of rain on the roof (music, I should say). She's waking us up at night to alert us that something's on the roof. It's like she's on alert- I hope she settles down, before she and her sleeping crate join the sod in the garage Mad

Oh dear, sanderson.  That reminds me that whenever I washed my hair, it rained afterwards. I hope your rain gauge does not stop the rain and that you get to use it.

My husband bought me a complete electronic weather station.... FOUR years ago *deep sigh!*  It's never gotten installed but I think I'll go through the box and find the rain gauge :-)

He's into "perfection" which doesn't always include a timeline, lol!

KJ, 0.9" of rain, I think it was Wed-Thursday. For me, it is water or wash the car.

AJ, I'm kind of like your husband. Embarassed Lots of projects planned, but gardening has kind of taken over and pushed them to the background.

California drought

Sure be nice if the drought were over and your aquifers fill.  Nothing like rain for ours and the earth's sake.  The best of nature to all of you.

When he managed to turn round, I wonder what happened to the two cars passing towards the flash flood.

When the guy turned around, he had to cross over a flooded area, which makes me wonder why the 2 cars kept going towards the mudslide after they drove through the flooded area?? Wait, they are the ones we see on the news. Very Happy

Re: California's Drought

Post  sanderson on 1/14/2016, 4:41 am

I also posted this under BTE but I wanted to share this here, as it applies to commercial farming in drought conditions.

Today, I found out that the carpet man who came out to measure our rooms uses BTE for commercial gardening. Or, rather he did for 6 years. Three well pump repairs ate into his profits so he quit renting that specific piece of farm land. A packing plant liked his produce so much that they are looking for a better piece of land for him.

He said he originally started the project to get the kids away from the TV and computers on the weekends. The land had huge stock piles of green waste that gardeners and tree trimmers dumped. So he bought a tractor, spread all the material on one acre, laid drip lines and started gardening. He eventually expanded to 6 acres of hot weather veggies such as tomatoes, peppers, squashes, cucumbers. He said with all the green waste and woody mulch he never had to fertilize. He did use Neem oil on the peppers but that was the only pesticide. I was almost in tears hearing that he only did shallow disking with a tractor that disked, seeded and rolled out plastic over the rows. When the ag workers had to use the bathroom, they had to drop their tools in a bucket of bleach water, and wash their hands both before and after using the bathroom to prevent any cross contamination.

Now, if only the other commercial farmers would do what he did, CA ag industry in this Valley might survive! He said the only other BTE style farm he has seen was either in AZ or NM while he was driving through.

0.8" of rain last night. I know it doesn't sound like a lot to many in wetter Regions, but it is better than a poke in the eye to the Valley folks.

Audrey, I read about your water-logged compost pile in the other topic. Who would have thought!

We tend to get double the rain you guys get in the valley.  I had a 5 gallon bucket out and turn up without its lid.  I didn't measure with a ruler, but it was anywhere from 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" from just one of our days this week.  Our ground is getting saturated and puddles that usually drain fairly rapidly have been sitting for days.

A California lake raised 17 ft. in one week!

My friend posted on her Facebook account yesterday that we have had 4.6 inches of rain in 2016.  That would be why I have standing puddles everywhere when I never do!!!   That's in 3 weeks... and more on the way.

Wow! Audrey-Jeanne, think what does to the water tables in that area.

Just go steady, RAIN, not too much at once so as to cause flooding.
