My Ugly Square Foot Garden

Post  1chichi on 5/5/2010, 11:30 pm

It's ugly now, but I think when everything fills in that will change.
The free banana crates are perfect cloches for the newly transplanted tomato seedlings. You can see one plant has grown through the cloche in less than 2 days!

I have been going through the forum posts and enjoying all the info and pics.
I found the SFG book at Books a million. Next, I incorporated SFG ideas into my
4' X 7' vege bed.
-The bed is sectioned into squares.
-There is a small key hole on the right rear, so I can access the middle squares.
-The concrete borders were found scattered around the property, & I used them to surround the bed.
-I used perforated plastic mulch and shredded cedar mulch (It gets extremely hot here in the summer, and I trying to keep the soil from drying out too much).
-Then I added quite a bit of fine vermiculite and chicken manure to the soil.
-Some rabbit manure was added to the tomato squares.
The soil wasn't draining well until I did this!
-On the back row are ASPARAGUS GREEN BEANS (to grow up the fence).
-There are several different types of tomatoes;
Early Girl, Juliet Grape, Yellow Pear,& Better Boy.
-Onion, Marigolds, Rosemary, Basil, Parsley, Callaloo greens, Nastutium, Okra, & Zinnia.
This is exciting!

I think that's a cool idea! Who cares how it looks if it's growing food? Smile

I want to grow some nasturtiums, not only because they're edible but also because they repel squash bugs, according to the book Carrots Love Tomatoes. I didn't get any seeds so I probably won't grow any this year, but if I run across them at the nursery I'll be picking up a flat to test that out!

It looks great to me! You have been very creative and using the banana crates is a great idea!

Where is here?

I'm in sunny South Carolina.
I really like the planning & seed collecting stage of gardening. I've already started thinking about veggies I can plant for my Fall garden!

My Ugly Square Foot Garden

Post  Bec on 5/6/2010, 9:09 am

I think that's a GREAT idea! And just what I need to do! I have a lot of winter squash plants growing that I rescued from the compost bin. I don't have enough garden boxes to plant them all and was going to just plant them in the ground. I have since found out (we just moved here) that less than an inch below the grass is almost solid pebbles and stones. I have having a dickens of a time getting fence posts into the ground. I was just going to plant the extra plants in the ground but now see that I can't dig it up. Was wondering what in the world I was going to do. Now I know! Banana crates! Thank you!

It would be helpful to everyone if you put that in your profile so that it shows up underneath your avatar. You can see how to do that here:

Boffer there is something funny going on with the format of the "Quotes" on the forum pages.

It gets used once then the forum page stays narrow below it. Some pages keep getting narrower each time the "Quote" function is used.

Shouldn't the postings stay the same width of full forum page?
