What do You Smell In Your Yard Today

Post  Cajun Cappy on Tue 21 Apr 2015 - 15:04

Last week it was the remaining citrus blossums filling the yard with their sweet smells.  They have for the most part all been replaced with baby fruit.  Taking over the dominant scent are the ligustrum wich are now in full bloom.  What are yall smelling now??? Inquiring Cappys wanna know?? Wink

Cherry blossom from a neighbour's tree.  He laughs at me when I pass by and stand under it breathing deeply.  He's promised to never cut it down, at least while still live around here.

Cut grass.  Daffodils.

I had to smile at your description of the scent of snow.  I also compare it with the scent of freshly fallen rain.

I have almost forgotten about snow except for the fact that I am waiting for the snow on top of the nearby mountains to disappear so that I can plant out tender stuff.  That was something I was told when I first came here in 1979.

Now I am going out to secure the scent of my own freshly mown grass.

Our chickens' manure. When the humidity is sky high, and the air is dead still, the smell lingers around and overpowers the other scents of spring.

Fortunately, it doesn't happen very often.

Fresh air, with a hint of sawdust. After this winter's heavy snows the chainsaws are a buzzin'.

Today the lagustrums are sharing with the freshly mowed yard.  It was tough mowing and I woke up stiff and sore but hte heady aroma was reward enough and soothing with the morning outside cup of coffee.

The air here is not that fresh, but I have two lilac trees that just started to grow and bloom in my backyard. I still smell the sweet fragrance of my Magnolia tree. But the amazing scent of my Hyacinth garden is what really fills the air.

Hmmmm, I would have to say onions.  My Egyptian Walking Onions are the only things growing out there, and I sure do love the smell of them!  Several have 'walked' into the grass, so as I walk around I crush a few small ones and the wonderful smell of green onions fills the air.

Kate:  I can't wait to smell the lilacs here!  We just saw the first leaf buds on some of the bare branches in the neighborhood last weekend.  We should have blooms by the middle of May here.  I love it when the scent wafts in through the open windows!

New born lamb.  That is a smell hard to describe but quite distinct.  The last ewe just had her first lamb.  She was talked through it by her mom.  I just came along for the well baby check. Laughing

The day has the sweet smell of Frangipani and the night air is filled with a musky clove smell of Lady-of-the-Night.

We've had some lovely warm days but  now I smell winter.  It's 44 degrees with 20 mile gusts.  The 2 foot tall asparagus is bent over from freezing temps, the strawberries with beginning flowers were hugging the ground then standing up as the day went on, they seem to be hanging in there although looking sad.  My potatoes never came up, guess they rotted in the cold freezing soil.  This all sorta bites right now.. and infant size Spinach is all I got for sure..

This morning as I sat out drinking my coffee I could sniff a subtle change in the still flowering ligustrums but couldn't put ma finger on it.  Later Peg came in with a gardenia blossom to show me.  Asking if I had noticed the several blooms that had appeared over night,  That splains it Cool

good thing I picked a couple big broccoli heads while walking around this morning cause to do it now I'd have to wade out to the garden box.  The rain train came through with a vvengeance  I really feel sorry for all the folks at the New Orleans jazz fest they are getting hammered now and tomorrow its gonna be a giant mud hole.  Oh well ya know what they say April showers bring May ......... crawfish ponds Razz

You mean you can smell?

Post  Razed Bed on Sat 25 Apr 2015 - 19:31

When the pollen count approaches a Google, like it does here, you might as well concrete shut your nostrils.  There is no smelling here, not even if a skunk comes into your yard eating limburger cheese.

Then, when it rains to wash the pollen away, the mold spore count gets so high, you can see your lawn getting blacker by the minute, as the spores multiple faster than the Duggars.

Post  Triciasgarden on Sun 26 Apr 2015 - 14:11

What a great topic! We have had a good amount of rain for three days. It has seemed to be just the right amount each day for it to soak in, then the sun would come out for several hours each day. I really feel blessed! I had to go out and smell the air and it just smells fresh right now. Tomorrow, probably, the regular smells will be back, along with all the pollen. I will have to re-smell and post my new findings.

Love all your smells!
