Rain rain another day

Post  Cajun Cappy on 4/28/2015, 11:56 am

I am sure there are all kind of wonders to report out in the yard.  Problem is its either raining or far too soggy to check.  We are on track for a record breaking soggy march and for us thats saying something.  yesterday alone 3.5 inches fell.  The only thing I can see from the window doing well is the weeds Sad.  They say the sun may come out tomorrow and if it does it'l be the first time in a while.  It'l take no less than 2 full days of sun to dry the sponge that is our yard out.  Maybe then I will have some thing worth reporting till then its standing water in places and more rain for today.

The silver lining is it will fill all the swamps with fresh water and thats a good thing indeed.

We are something like 4 inches above normal for April, which is just plain goofy.  I feel bad for us that our gardens have been water-logged, but we can at least collect the water and have it stored for summer, and we can even sump pump it if it floods enough.

However, our friends in the Golden State really have it bad.  They cannot make many changes for not having rain.  Without humidity, they cannot even harvest moisture from the air.  When I saw that Bear Mountain was open for hiking and biking because there was no snow at all, it was shocking.

Mm mm m!  I'd like me some crawfish with my collards.  Especially if they were swimming past the back porch and I could just grab em.

Cappy, does the MM drain well for you?

Man I hate to answer this question on acounta yall may throw me out of here.  I aint used MM in years.  I started square foot gardening before his first book.  I saw him on PBS.  every time we start a new box we start it right.  But after that its compost and such from then on.  Our boxes are 12 inches high(how mel first started) and drain well thats the main reason we do it, that and the space.  I am sure there may be some mix down there somewhere but we have adapted and use a version of square foot gardening and do not adhere strictly ot the book of Mel.   Sorry Sad

Cappy, Did you say that your more recent boxes were started with Mel's Mix and that since then, you only add compost? If so, that is exactly what SFGners are supposed to do. Very Happy

The morning dawned clear cool and wonderful.  I almost didn't know how to act. Razz  The standing water has almost all receeded from our neighborhood and if the weather guessers are right we may be in for a wonderful weekend.  At this rate we hope and plan to amke it official play in teh yard weekend every thing is badly in need of some TLC

I would rather have sent it to the poor folks out in California but I am just glad it left here for a while we are getting down right moldy. Rolling Eyes

A friend actually mentioned that if we can pipe oil, what not pipe water.

I used to live in the Florida Keys, way down below Miami,  They piped the water down from Miami in large pipes running along the highways.  Every time there was a large car accident, some idiot would bust the pipes and we would all lose water until they could repair it.  I don't know how many miles that was, but it took 2 -3 hours to drive so I would guess about 150 miles.  If the pipes can go that far, I am sure they can go farther.

My understanding is that much of California water comes from the Colorado river. This is pumped many miles. I don't know what side of the mountains this all happens in but it is pumped a Long distance. As a youth we used to fish the bridges of the Keys. We would shower under the air Eliminator vents under the old Bahia Honda bridge. The sure was a old leaky sysem back then.

Water is brought in to California from I think the Colorado River. Going from California to Las Vegas or vice versa, I used to see the open aqueduct on the south side of the freeway. That water may have gone only Southern California though. I know there was/is a spillage that emptied into the Van Norman Dam in the Northern San Fernando Valley. It may have gone other places, but I don't know. Last time I saw, the Van Norman Dam was still there.

"Water from the Colorado River is used by 7 States . . . "

I moved my response to "California's Drought" topic.
