Greetings from South-Western Pennsylvania

Post  clm2112 on 5/9/2015, 2:13 pm

Just a quick "Hello" to y'all.

New to SFG, and still reading Mel's book.  I grew up on a traditional farm, which passed to me recently when I moved back from Central Florida.  I have several years of work ahead clearing fields that have not been planted in 30 years.  Meanwhile, I figured I would first re-hab the kitchen vegetable garden using the SFG approach.  I'm currently cleaning up the area and building frames for the first planting.

Howdy back at ya! happy hi

I can hear Al Michaels in my mind (he's been an announcer for Monday and Sunday night  NFL games for forever) "Welcome to Three Rivers Stadium located at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers."  Oh man, has it really been 14 years since the stadium was imploded?

Come to think of it, the Oak Ridge Boys mentioned the Monongahela in one of their songs.  Oh jeez, that was the eighties.   crazy!

Anyhow, welcome to the forum.  I hope you  have the success and enjoy SFG as much as I have.

Thanks,

Yes.. to me Three Rivers Stadium and the Civic Arena were Pittsburgh's signature structures.  The place doesn't seem the same without them.

Spent most of the day chewing up the old garden with a rototiller, hope that's the last time I have to use it for a long while.  I'm not using the tilled up soil for the frames, but I need to address the drainage in the area where the garden was..it's always gotten a little soupy there every spring.  I'm going to move the tilled up soil around to create "mounds" a few inches above the surrounding ground, on top of which the frames will sit.  Then fill in the area between the mounds with gravel to form the paths between the frames and give the rainwater somewhere to go.  Otherwise, the area is ready to roll (southern exposure, plenty of sun, and right outside the kitchen door.)

Welcome and good luck.
If your having trouble finding the correct size vermiculite there is a shop in Marion Center, Pa that will order it for yo at a great price..  Home Farm Supply.
May be a trip for you, however it could save you much looking.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind if I cannot source anything closer to home.  I haven't started calling the local nurseries and supply places yet.  The other two components are pretty easy to come by.
