I don't know how to make the orange show up better. I'm a little nervous about purple cauliflower as I bought a package of Purple of Sicily for next fall. Shocked Does the orange one taste good?

Nice, Rosina! Not sure about your purple broc....I have had the colored versions from Krogers before, and raw at least, they taste like the normal white version.

What are Hawaii folks planting and harvesting?

Post  kauairosina on 3/3/2017, 5:28 pm

Well, we have discovered what has decimated our Swiss Chard.  Molly, our Auracana that lays the blue eggs has been flying over the fence from the chicken yard and it has been discovered that she, not caterpillars, not grasshoppers, not any other known varmints, is the one munching on every doggone one.  A 4 by 7 square foot bed full!  No wonder she has such golden yolks.

Kauarosina SFG in Kauai

Post  kauairosina on 3/4/2017, 1:42 am

Yep.  we can do chicken wire but it sure makes it more difficult to harvest. Of course, we would then have something to harvest.

Could you use two 4x3.5 lift off chicken wire cages? Just take them off when you harvest. I use them to protect my 4x4 beds from squirrels and rabbits.

Re: Kauairosina - SFG in Kauai

I've seen this several times on those lists of simple garden hacks but I think it was meant for cats, but would a bunch of plastic forks stuck in the soil, tines up, prevent/deter the chicken?

Also, what was that motion sensor activated sprinkler called. I remember one of the guys posted he installed it to keep away the deer, but was going to test it first on his wife.

If those don't work, you could try a big pot. Add some onion, celery, noodles, etc. Very Happy

I have done this. It works fairly well as long as you watch what is growing inside the cage and don't let growth compromise the removal aspect.
What I like better is cutting up welded wire into sections or pieces the can be strategically placed in or around the beds, plants, etc.
This method works very well for chickens AND cats. Smile
