Pepper Crazy - Planning for 2016

Post  vortex on 6/5/2015, 11:35 am

I'm trying to plan out a new section of production next year that is more than what I typically have.

In the winter, I make a ton of chile based dishes. Whether that's chili, soups, Mexican dishes, whatever. Those use a lot of chile powder/pepper and cumin, to start.

What I typically do now on an annual basis are jalapeno and serrano.

What I would like to add are some caribbean, habanero, new mexico, and ancho.

Any other thoughts on some great chile peppers that might add to the mix?

The area that I'm not sure is the cumin, and if it's worth it. What I'm seeing on that is some, but not a plethora of information about it's use in the herb garden. My guess is that for any real use is that it takes a significant amount of space to get any real usable amounts.

Does anyone have any experience with cumin, and the number of plants it would take to get an amount sufficient for home use? Say 1/2 a gallon to 1 gallon of seeds?

It looks to be about 9/sq on planting, but on average how many seeds would one expect per plant? 1/8 of a cup? 1/4 of a cup? At 1/4 cup, that would require about 7 squares to get close to a gallon. So 1/8 would make for 14-15 squares, or 1/2 would make for 4 squares.

If anyone can get me in the ballpark on that, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I think it is Deb over on the West coast that grows cumin?
I sprinkled some seed in the greenhouse this year. It looks like carrots coming up. I would assume a more carrot type spacing. I grew some in a pot once that flowered and I got an umbel flower of seed from each plant, think tespoon per plant but that was not a good growing situation. Why not experiment with a couple squares and see how it goes?
