wooden screen cage built for one of the beds

Post  hokie_paw on 7/1/2015, 10:24 am

Hey everybody,
Last weekend we finally built a wooden screen cage for one of the beds after caterpillars were eating up my kale and the squash borers had taken out the zucchini and winter squash.  I ended up just pulling a good bit out of the garden.  Live and learn as they say.
I am just going to wait until time to plant for july, august, and September, before I fill the vacant squares.  I still have about half of the garden producing but nothing to the extent of the pics I am seeing on here.  Hopefully one day I will!!!!!  Its slow and steady right now which is probably better for me right now.  I am very interested in seeing if the screen cage makes an impact on the fall harvest.

Have a great day

See the following picture to see what I did last year and not a single squash bug or squash vine borer.  But I did have to open the Tulle to pollinate the zucchini each morning.

This year I bought a zucchini that was parthenocarpic (sp) and doesn't need help pollinating but I never got around to covering them.  I just pulled them this past weekend.  I cut the stems open and there were at least 2 to 3 borers in each stem.  I am going to replant some this weekend and cover with tulle.

Here is what I did last year.
