Please Be Careful this weekend

Post  Cajun Cappy on 7/1/2015, 1:14 pm

To my fellow inhabitants of the steamy south.  Please be careful the temp and humidity are gonna be brutal this weekend.  Get your southern mosey on, stick to the shade when possible alwaYS HAVE A BOTTLE OF WATER WITH YA.  Carry a sweat rag.  NEVER wear anti persperant when out in the day light.  Go with deodorant instead.  Remember yankees call us slow walking and slow talking for a reason we know how to live in the steamy south.

+1, Cappy!  I plan to stay indoors most of the weekend, except to water the garden!

Good marie.  I thought of you when I wrote this.  We have pull down shades for our patio and a water cooled fan.  We may light up the BBQ and keep the dove company but we plan to stay under cover.  I barely got the back yard mowed and it came one of those afternoon showers like our video.  Hopefully it wont last too long and I'll be able to do the rest tomorrow.

Very hot here too. I try to keep in mind that when it is really hot, you're not supposed to wait until thirsty to drink water. Drink *before* you feel thirsty.

It's also a good idea to make sure your calcium and potassium intake is adequate.

+1, Donna!

I noticed that I was getting borderline cramps in my calf after being outside a lot of last weekend with this class.

Cappy - I WISH we had one of those pull-down shades...  Our house faces west, so we could actually use one on both sides.  Unfortunately, we're unable to put trees in our front yard since our students use said yard for parking when our classes are full.  (Don't want to block in the neighbors and the driveway only fits 4 cars.  We have 3.  So the math is a bit tight, lol.)

And in extra-dry and drought areas, leave the fireworks to the pros.  The fire departments here are gearing up for calls about fires started with  fireworks by homeowners.

The City has relaxed the watering schedule for the 4th and 5th so folks can wet their dead grass and flower beds without being ticketed. If they were smarter (wait, government?), they would have started the severe watering schedule on July 6th instead on April 1 so that everything is dead by the time of the great fireworks.

I like that idea. But not everyone is as smart as you, and fewer still can get anything done politically, no matter how smart they are!

Just a reminder that it only takes a spark.

It's getting dark here, so the fireworks are starting.  Thankfully we had some rain this morning....

Hey, Cappy - Got it!  Thanks again!  I'll let you know when I have to try it...

And, remember, "hot" is relative. Saturday it was still under 80°F here, but the humidity was building fast. I left my water bottle sitting on the kitchen table, but I wanted to get the heavy work done before noon. Big mistake. By 11am I was on the verge of passing out. I lost six pounds in a few hours. As near as I can tell it was all water. I spent the next hour in bed and the rest of the weekend sipping diluted Gatorade. I'm still not right.

Stay hydrated!

Hey, Fred!

I hope you're feeling better and will continue to improve.

Hydration + electrolytes is the recipe for surviving hot/humid episodes.  I always recommend calcium and potassium (ex:  milk, bananas).

Please note that I'm not a medical professional, but that I have plenty of personal experience.

Re: Please Be Careful this weekend

Heat is definitely very relative. By the time we get to midsummer, I can walk around in heat that a month earlier would make me feel dizzy and that at the beginning of spring would in short order have flattened me for the rest of the day.

When it comes to adapting to heat and cold, I want to do it as much as I can so that eventually I'm comfortable rather than miserable outside. So I often try to push the envelope a little bit and stay out longer that I'd like. But in summer I always make sure to do it with plenty of water on hand. I've seen people get heatstroke, and if that happens to you, you're in no shape even to get out of the sun anymore.

I'm with Cappy,
Dang it has been hot around here!
I've had so many projects going on the yard / garden have suffered. I started to get things weeded out yesterday but had to lament about mid-day. Got home after work today to some over cast skies and was able to finished up some of the beds.
As hot as it has been here I been seeing some of your weather banners at 97-100 degrees plus.  MAN THAT IS HOT!!!
Hoping the fall weather treats us all a little better this year.

Getting better.

Oddly enough, when I was a Scout Leader, I was always bugging the kids about drinking water on the trail, because I am prone to getting dehydrated. (Oh yes, I know better! No excuses).

When ever I get feeling hot, I think back to the day I toured a foundry in Longview Texas in late June. It was 110-130 where we were about 30 feet from the forges. When I got back to my hotel there were six cold Dos Equis in the bar fridge. The first evaporated on the back of my throat, I didn't taste the second because it went down so fast. The third tasted pretty good!

Off for another glass of ice water.

I don't know if it's true, but I was told that once you experience heat exhaustion, you are susceptible to it in the future. ??

Part of being careful out there includes keeping an eye on those around you.  If a southerner says hey yall, somebody hold my beer and watch this...... step quickly AWAY AND PREPARE TO CALL 911 Shocked

Medications, whether singly or in combination, can also affect your ability to withstand heat or direct sunlight, so it's crucial to know what you're on and how it can affect you and what you should/shouldn't be doing while taking it.  This applies to long-term regimens, obviously, but also to meds that you may be taking short-term for a passing condition.

You can be as hydrated as possible, yet still pass out or suffer other complications if you're not mindful of the interactions between heat/sunshine + your medications.
