Nice vacation but.....

Post  johnp on 7/2/2015, 9:39 am

Well we just returned from a week or so vacation visiting our three granddaughters. It was really a lot of fun since two of them are old enough to really play with so it was fun. We also did a lot of sailing and got to watch the start of the first leg of the Transatlantic race 2015. Got to go down to the shipyard the morning of the start and watch the crews getting ready. Also got to go to a place where they park your car for you when you arrive. When we went in they suggested that we eat in the bar area ( couldn't be that we were dressed like tourists could it). Had  nice light salads and one glass each of the cheapest wine on the menu and the bill was only $90.00. But that's were the start of the race was so I guess that was the price to see it. My son however joined us and he got in for nothing. I guess it's who you know. Well we got home right before dark and the front garden area looked good so our pet sitter did water as we asked him to. With barely and light left went to check our garden and found the peppers laying on the ground, the eggplant the same and the MM in all the boxes felt like dust. I went back to the house, turned on the water and watered the best I could in the dark, surrounded by clouds of mosquito's. The next morning most looked better but two flower pots were dead. The greenhouse plants somehow lived (sweet potatoes) so my soaking right before we left may have saved them. While checking the various boxes I noticed that my box with the kale looked like 25 % of the kale was dead. I took off the tulle to look and they were dead but the rest looked OK at first glance. We had kale right before we left and the whole box was fine. We decided to have kale last night so I went back to the house, got a basket and returned. When I started cutting I found the underside of all the leaves were covered with eggs (I think). Thousands and thousands of eggs covering all of the leaves on all my plants. This happened over the course of 11 days. The eggs are a little bigger than the white leaf miners and are yellowy in color. I pulled all the plants, sprayed with a neem product and threw them in the compost. I am thinking maybe they need to go to the burn pile. Going to farmers market today for kale Evil or Very Mad

I agree: everything seems to be more expensive when I have my tourist shirt on!

This is the first thing that came to mind.  Did they look like this?

Aphids, and they come in different colors.

Bugs got in through your tulle? That's a bummer. And aphids can be so relentless.

John, glad you had a good vacation. $90 ?? Shocked Sometimes it's just worth it.

I'm sorry about the aphids running amok.

Thanks, my wife also thought they were aphids. The lady bugs could not get in. Going to learning school on bug covers, I need to remove and check more often.  Shocked

Those little buggers will suck a plant dry.  Not sure about neem oil in the compost pile...

I did some reading about Neem oil in the past. It seems to be a relatively safe product to use around the garden, pets and earthworms. Just don't spray when bees are present, and allow to dry out before they start their foraging for the day.

I don't know about the trace amount left on the veggies and veggie plants if you compost them. I would think that the hot temps would obliterate neem so that mold would grow as it cools off. Just thinking.
