Hello from Pooler, GA

Post  Egyptian on 8/17/2015, 8:10 pm

Hello everyone,

I am recently retired from teaching elementary school students.  I just received my raised garden bed today.  I was looking online for the Soil3 that I had seen before.  I am ready to order my soil.  I was planning on using the soil3.  I've read all the reviews and people rave about it.  I will let you know if it's as good as it seems to be.

I saw this site when looking for my soil3 site to place an order.  I'm a new gardener so I thought maybe this forum would be helpful.

As to the composting issue.  I have read where you shouldn't put meat or any kind of fat in a compost bin.

Welcome, Egyptian, from Ohio! Congrats on your retirement, and your new raised beds! Have you read the Square Foot Gardening books? They are indispensible for starting this journey, in my opinion. I just bought the All New SFG 2nd Ed. off Amazon, and it is a great book, but the original still holds a special spot for me as well as it is such an innovative notion.

You should check out this site by searching up there in the upper left hand corner for "composting", tons of great resources for making a variety of compost piles/bins, etc.

glad you\'re here

Hi Egyptian, welcome to the SFG forums!

This is my first year, too.  Our weather here in Georgia can be crazy, but I know you'll be pleased with the overall results from this method.

Congratulations on retirement and finding square foot garden. There are loads of older conversations about composting. If you use the search engine in the top left side make sure the inside box is checked. You'll learn all you want and more about it. Good luck with you garden.

Egyptian, Welcome to the Forum from California! glad you\'re here I'm not sure from your introduction if you are going to try Square Foot Gardening with self-mixed Mels Mix or if you are going to add Soil3 to your existing dirt. I Googled the product and it looks like it is just nice compost, which is a good thing. If you were going to make Mels Mix you would blend 1/3 Soil3, 1/3 fluffed peatmoss and 1/3 coarse vermiculite. No dirt. Fill raised beds to 6" high and plant. As the Mix shrinks, the compost is being used up and you will continue to add compost for the rest of the life of the box. One of the many benefits of gardening the SFG is that weeds are virtually non-existent.

I also recommend that you read "All New Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew. It is a nice way to garden and will carry you many years into your retirement (congrats).
