Hello from Baja Mexico

Post  Thomas C Smith on 8/31/2015, 12:35 pm

Gardening in Baja has been a challenge. I live on the Sea of Cortez and have a rooftop Square Foot garden. Mucho calor in the summer, high winds wintertime, hurricanes, chubascos, plus bugs bugs bugs. No garden center or cooperative extension. Friends carry down seeds. I manage to grow some lettuce, beets, scallions, mustards. Very little luck with melons and tomatos.
Still, I plan to plant again next month and expect to be seeking advise.
Would like to hear from anyone gardening in Baja Sur.

Thomas, I see you joined a year ago, but I will now say, "Welcome to the Forum from Fresno, CA, the land of hace calor summers!" glad you\'re here I admire anyone who has a roof top garden. No protection from excessive elements unless you build it. And then, Mother Nature may decide to blow it away! Shocked We would love to see a photo of your set up. We love photos!

Growing in hot climates: Shade cloth and heavy mulch can help. Also, using seeds for hot weather climate plants. If you go to the local farmer markets, buy their produce and save the seeds, you should have a fighting chance. Tomatoes and peppers are 2 that are easy to save the seeds.

No luck with tomatoes in Mexico? I thought that was their home town! Any idea what the trouble is there?

Welcome, Thomas, from Ohio! Sounds like daunting conditions, there are many people here who deal with adverse heat, arid and other weather so I am sure you will get some good advice. That said, a roof-top garden sounds very pretty!

Hi Thomas.  Welcome from Atlanta, GA!  Glad to see that you're joining the party!

I'd take a look at Escaped Lunatic's posts.  He's also on a rooftop, although since he's in China, I'm sure he's got different weather than you.

Brainchasm has a lot of heat too - in the desert.  So that would be another good source of info.

And, of course, our Cali folks will be chiming in!

Sanderson's right - we like photos...

Aloha from Hawaii Thomas.  Do send pictures.  And be sure your roof top is strong enough. But you already knew that, right?
