Herbs

Post  sanderson on 9/3/2015, 2:21 am

A few weeks ago I bought a small coffee grinder from Target, about $15. Today I finally got around to grinding the dried garlic and cayenne peppers into powders. I didn't add an anti-caking agent so I will have to pound the baby food jars when I want to use them. Embarassed I would have ground the coriander but there were so many stems and I don't know how to eliminate them. Is it okay to grind the stems with the seeds? I also dried some basil and parsley in the microwave, and strung up some more cayenne and green chili to dry. The only thing I did not achieve this year is drying cilantro. Next year!!

Can you use the old way of getting the chaff from wheat and other grains? Drop them in front of a fan and let the wind blow away the stems and smaller bits while the heavier seeds fall onto a towel or sheet below? Or just try it outside on a windy day?

I'll try a fan outdoors. I tried blowing but I didn't like the idea of breath on stored food. Now where is my winnowing basket? Laughing

Most times I use a small morter and pestle to grind herbs and seeds ( corriander) just before use.
