Are you talking about a cold frame (to keep 'em warm) or a row cover (to protect them from bugs)?
I used 6mil clear plastic to make a cold frame over my lettuce, spinach, and potatoes this year. We had 5 inches of snow on the 2nd day of spring - just days after I installed the cold frame. I found the plastic at Lowes in the insulation section - near the big rolls of pink fiberglass.

I know what you mean.
I walked into the garden center on a sunny day 5 days before the snow came. The guy working the cash register was wearing a jacket and standing inside a wind break made of the very plastic I was looking for (Lowe's garden centers being open to the elements as they are). I asked him, "Where can I find plastic row cover for my plants?" Blank look. Shocked I had to explain that I wanted to cover my vegetables to protect them from the coming cold. Blank look. Shocked He said he didn't think they carried anything like that but if they did it might be with the weed barrier. It wasn't. But I KNEW I'd seen it in the store (I spend WAY to much time there). I went to the paint department thinking it might be with the drop cloths, but they were too lightweight. One of the guys in the paint department suggested I try the insulation aisle and there it was. On the way out I made sure to stop by the clueless guy in the garden center. I held up my roll of 6 mil plastic, pointed to the stuff stretched on the wind break surrounding him and said in a loud, clear voice, "This is on aisle 16!" and kept walking out the door. Razz

"Can I get that @ Home Depot?" Yes, in the building supplies dept. The thicker 6 mil is a lot easier to handle and more durable.

Boffer I was asking about the shade cloth.

Can you get that at Home Depot? I saw your post for FarmTek. However, I"m looking for shade cloth - is cheesecloth similar to shade cloth?

If you are covering a temporary cold frame, then the plastic from hardware or big box stores work fine since you take it down after a few months. But if you are doing a permanent hoop house/ green house, then I would suggest using one that is UV protected. I uses a 4 year guaranteed poly in my last green house and it was still in good shape 5 years later when I moved. Here's where I will probably purchase it for my next hoophouse (hopefully later this year) since they sell smaller than 100' pieces:

I bought 6 mil and it was in the paint department and my big box store. Only problem I've had with it is is seems to want to tear right were it was folded in the box.
