Lower South Oct 2015

Post  walshevak on 10/2/2015, 3:06 am

So  far Oct has brought rain, rain and more rain along the East Coast, but it's looking more like the hurricane may miss us in the lower south.  Crossed fingers.  How are the inland areas of the region faring?

Hope my winter garden doesn't drown.

Kay

Rain rain rain.  I even had to put a poly tunnel above my lettuce to keep the rain from pounding the pour little seedlings into the ground.  My baby spinach transplants have survived so far but can't take much more of this.

Looks like the hurricane will miss the lower south but not the rain.  I think you guys are going to get a boat load of rain.  Last nights news said at least 12-18 inches of rain in some areas.

I am closer to Walterboro than Charleston, thank goodness. Chas. is expecting 12 to 18 in. of rain. The streets were already flooded and some were closed. No school for today.
I live in a fairly dry micro climate I guess. My pond is down 2 1/2 feet and we have only had abt. 3 inches of rain. Was hoping for more! I put some early fallen leaves on my newly planted beets, carrots, spinach and radishes and around broccoli and cauliflower plants.  IF we get some of the heavy rain, the seeds may be moved but will remain in the boxes, which have room for some mulch after plants come up.

I sure hope the rain does not bother the gardens up the East coast! (Kay)

I pray that the hurricane does not hit any land and goes on out to sea quickly!

I will prob. harvest abt. mid Nov. May have to cover beets if we get an early frost.

I'm going to try waiting to plant my garlic til late Nov. I've not had lg. bulbs in past, and the plants usually come up before we have any frost at all.

In my dry micro-climate, I have received 3.5 in. of rain since 4pm yesterday. Its been light steady rain, so garden should be fine. Maybe the pond will get filled!

Well, I spoke too soon! The pond is full and running across yard. Ducks are swimming in the lg puddles in the yard, no where near the pond!
Have not checked the garden, but a huge puddle is in front of the gate.

We got over 10 inches just yesterday and last night, and we live in a dry climate!
Before dark the birds were sitting on the rain gauge, so prob. got more rain, plus, my gauge only holds 10 in. and it was overflowing this AM.

Some areas got 25 inches, with 8-12 more expected.

Predictions expect this storm to move and follow coastline, from Wilmington,NC(Kay, good luck) down to Chas. SC

It is now raining again!

I guess I should consider myself lucky.  We only got an inch of rain in the last few days.  But for the last two weeks, nothing but overcast skies.  Drizzling on and off all day every day.  Sun is expected to appear again on Tuesday.  Good luck littlejo and Kay.  And Atlanta Marie.  I guess being on the north side of Atlanta has its drawbacks this week.

Even my table top  salad tubs are having trouble draining.  All the winter garden plants are looking beat down and we have at least another day or two to go.

I just realized why my mini tabletop gardens are not doing well.  Had a few days of sunshine and I noticed the southern exposure sun has dropped below my evergreen trees and the garden get no direct sun at all.  Started checking entire yard and the only sun is down by some of the pond beds and at the street edge of the front yard.  A few hours start about noon on the west side of the house out from the house shadow.  ARGGGGG!  Would be ok if the trees dropped their leaves in the winter, but these are either live oaks or laurel oaks and 40-80 ft tall.

Re: Lower South Oct 2015

Post  walshevak on 10/24/2015, 7:20 am

Well the cold snap last weekend got me moving again.  Sunday I got some help moving the greenhouse frames to the side of the house and putting the covers on.  All the citrus trees and some lemon grass and a bay leaf tree are inside.  Hanging Boston ferns are inside waiting for bigger S hooks to hang from middle support.  Can't find my heaters so may have to buy 3 before really cold weather starts.  I have power cords running from the outside outlet of the house to one and from the NEW outside outlet from my renovated she shed.

The peppers I want to overwinter are in the little greenhouse. Power cord will run from the side door light.

and plastic is on the pond bed for the winter veggies.

Bud Lite tabletops are not doing so well.  As stated in another post, they are not getting any direct sunlight.  My original plan was to cover these units with plastic as well, but that would cut what little light they are getting.  So these will just have to made do the best they can until the hard frosts.

No, on the south side, but the trees are so high that no direct sunlight gets on that area during the late fall, winter months.  Gets all day sun during the summer.

Kay, have you thought of putting cloth/hoops over your tubs? Some water drips through, sure, but a lot will naturally follow its attraction to other water and pull itself down with gravity into other places than your soil/plants if you use cloth. That attraction is strong enough to pull massive amounts of water up hundred foot trees, so it's no joke. You might find your tubs less inundated if the water had somewhere else to go.
