"Virtual" Roadtrip of the Desert and Old West

Post  sanderson on 10/10/2015, 3:13 am

So far we have driven 1,000 miles and finally made it to Lake Powell, AZ.  Today alone was over 400 miles from Ely, NV though west Utah)  Some of the Old West and Deserts are startling amazing.  So different from Fresno with the smoggy air.  tongue Geology, sunsets, boot hills, a restored Indian Chief  Cool . highway 49 (1849 gold rush in CA), near ghost towns, 1800s buildings) I would like to share some of the photos but I don't want to bore anyone.  Internet connection/cell phone reception have been spotty and tonight is the first time the photos on husbands phone (better photos than mine) have been down loaded to his computer.

sanderson ... sounds like a great trip!!!

When you say you don't want to post photos because you don't want to bore people, that concerns me.  Over the past few months I've posted tons of photos of my gardens, microgreens and virtual flyovers. I hope I am not boring people.

PLEASE POST YOUR PHOTOS!

So here is something we could do sanderson.  You tell me (via email if you like) your route (e.g., main highways, towns and cities) and I will do a virtual flyover of the routes and send you the screen shots.

Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe - Wed morning to Wed night.  We took a side trip off highway 50, down and back up 49 to see the fire damage.  Went south as far as Jackson without seeing the fire area.  It's actually quicker to get to the area from Fresno.

Near Plymouth:  dry grasses and oak trees typical of the foothills.  A fire waiting to happen.

Sutter Creek, gold rush town going back to 1849.  I think a town similar burned in the recent fire.  Hotel with typical 2nd story balcony.  Each building has it's own facade like in the western movies. .
South Lake Tahoe (where I lost my $20 across the border in Stateline, NV.  This is a huge lake and the water level is down maybe 6'.  Not bad.

Thursday morning from Tahoe to Ely, NV at night.  Weren't paying attention Embarassed and took a 1 1/2 hour side trip south on 395 off of I-50, east on 208, north on alternate 95, back to I-50 at Silver Springs.  Then a grueling long drive on towards Ely, NV.  Just a preview of natural formations to come in Utah.  This is at Yerrington on north-bound 95.  I finally realized that the sky was true blue with white clouds.  Shocked
Stopped towards dusk at Austin, CA for more photos of western buildings.  We didn't see a soul in town.  While taking this photo from the streets. . . ..Ken tried to duck into this place . . .  Razz
The sun was nearly setting as we drove past Toiyabe Nat'l Forest.
Dragged into the Prospector Hotel and Casino in Ely after dark. Proceeded to lose $10 before bed.

[I've taken 309 photos so far on this trip so I am trying to narrow it down to post 4 per day.]  TD, I hope you can follow all of the highways for the virtual flights.

Friday morning from Ely, NV on east 50 into UT, south on I-15 to Cedar City, then east on State 14 to 89 south to Page, AZ (Lake Powell on the Colorado River.
Ely, NV, the Indian Chief:
How to describe highway 50?  It was so empty and long over into Utah.  No one around for a visit a little scrub bush! The rock formations are getting prettier.  At least 5 different colors of rocks hereot

Blue sky and clouds
One sign said "Welcome to Utah."  This one reminds me how hard it was for the western pioneers.
Western sky at Cedar Springs at 6:23 PM.
Above Cedar Springs on State 14.
Alton at sunset.  Junction of State 14 and Highway 89 in So Utah.  After that it was dark so I can spare you more photos for this day!

TD, I'm still traveling, now in Sedona, AZ. When I get back home and have reliable internet, I can give you the airport designators for the trips.

Mt. Zion Nat'l Park on Highway 9 in south Utah.

The hole is for ventilation in the long rock tunnel.

In the same area, a cave along Highway 89 between Mt. Carmel and Kanab.  Private collection of Indian, So. America, dinosaur, etc. artifacts.
