Hi from Essex, England

Post  naughtymoose on 10/28/2015, 8:29 pm

Hi folks.

I'm going to be starting a small vegetable corner in our small garden. I've got a really small space, and I'm hoping to make a self-irrigating raised bed of 15 square feet.

I look forward to learning and sharing with others around the world!

Hey there, naughtymoose! Welcome to SFG! I hail from Ohio, USA, but there are many on here from all over the globe. How exciting for your new adventure, you will love the payoff as far as healthy food that you grew yourself.

Have you read All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew? Or any of his SFG books? That would be a real good starting point for you starting out. If so, what ideas do you have?

Looking forward to hearing lots from you on your plans, pictures are really helpful, too.

Many folks here with tons of experience, and we all learn lots glad you\'re here

Hi Naughtymoose.  Welcome from Atlanta, GA (SE USA).

I third what SR said.  And I would add that the archives on this forum are full of all sorts of good hard-earned info as well.

We're quite a gabby bunch and always willing to help a fellow gardener!

Thanks new friends!

The SFG book is being delivered today, and I've already done a lot of reading about growing vegetables and fruit in small spaces. I'm not a total beginner, but haven't grown vegetables or fruit for a long time. I've watched a lot of YouTube videos too.

I've already started dipping into the archives, and have been taking notes!

I'll keep you updated.

I'm getting an allotment!!!

Post  naughtymoose on 11/25/2015, 3:58 pm

Hi folks

Tomorrow my partner and I are going to inspect an allotment nearby.

It will cost us £10 per year, for a plot that is 20x65' (120 sq metres to me!)

I mentioned to the association chap that I was planning on using raised beds, and he said that he might have something that will suit.

More info to follow, as I get it!

Look forward to following your progress, naughtymoose.

When I was very young, my dad had an allotment and I used to "help".  That has given me my love of gardening now.

Ten pounds per year is a very good deal.  I hope it is near to where you live.

It is 10 minutes' drive (3 miles)

When I can start cycling again it will take me about 30 minutes.

There is a bus that stops at the end of our road, and I have a free bus pass due to my illness (chronic fatigue) I shall be making use of it.

So excited, I might burst!!! Very Happy

I think gardening will be very good for you.  Just pace yourself carefully.  I do as I find I get a lot done if I take breaks.  Sometimes I do forget myself and carry on as I am feeling good.  But then I pay for it the following day. Very Happy

Moose, I got all excited about your allotment. If you use raised beds, you can get 13 4' x 8' beds plus room for a two 3' x 3' x 3' side-by-side compost bins! That's 416 sq ft of no-walk-on beds.

We are now the proud tenants of plot 43!

Close to the water supply, manure and woodchip piles and the loo (but not too close!)

A place to park adjacent to the plot, and not too far from the entrance gate, for if I travel by bus.

The ground has already been sprayed, so I'll have to tidy it up, and then I can start sorting out my plan.

It won't all be SFG, but there will certainly be some beds.

PS

Embarassed Yes, I do tend to get excited when I see "land'. My yard is so small that I weep for joy when I see that someone can have a huge garden. Lots of cardboard on the ground, frames, piled high with leaves and manure, waiting for spring. Sacrilege I know, but with this much land, the vermiculite would be prohibitive. $$ One box at a time converted to SFG Mel's Mix.

You are close to wood chip piles? You are blessed.  Make full use of them on top of cardboard/newspaper/manure, before any snow falls and you will reap the benefits next spring.

Meanwhile start a couple of SFG beds if you can.  Do you have any help? Just do not overdo it yourself.  Nag, Nag.

Hi Moose. I'm originally from Stoke-on-Trent (the Potteries) and now reside in Ottawa, Canada. I'm new to SFG this year and have really enjoyed it.  I started with just two 4 ft by 4 ft SFG boxes in addition to our existing gardens (veggies and flowers). The folks on this forum are great and are always willing to answer questions and provide advice. It looks like you have lots of fun ahead of you. Be careful not to overdo it and hurt your health or become discouraged.

What ever it has been sprayed with, moose will have to live with it.  Try and find out, moosey, ask what they used.

Re: Hi from Essex, England

Post  sanderson on 11/29/2015, 4:18 am

All I picture is pathways of cardboard and wood chips, and wood framed beds layered with cardboard piled high with stuff to compost over the winter.  I noticed the narrow (2' ??) wide isles between plots.  I would frame, say, 1/4 of the lot, with a private cardboard and wood chip pathway.

This has given me an idea for a church near by.  They have only developed about 1/3 of the lot with the rest having to be plowed.  I recently stopped by one day and talked with some volunteers working, about starting a community garden.  I haven't followed up but maybe they would let me do a 4' x 8' [10' x 14'] demo mini plot.  I should do this.  Then they can get an idea of whether they want to proceed with the idea.  I know husband wants to haul some more horse manure for me!!
