inside my cold frame

Post  jimmy cee on 10/30/2015, 6:26 pm

I love this cold frame so much I am going to make a couple more. What is shown here are the plants I recently transferred from my enclosed bed into the frame.  Using the containers that I placed around them provided me with a good base for transplanting. Just a small trowel down below and the entire piece cam up without disturbing the roots. A few types of lettuce along with kohlrabi is what I have.
Grids are buried under excess MM.

Really nice looking produce there. What are your night time temps now?

Nice, Jimmy. I would love to have a cold frame. Not sure where I would put it, would need to be close to the house.....south-facing would be preferable I assume?

Only way suitable for a cold frame, facing south.

Did you build the bottom part? And hinged Windows on top?

Cold frame is part of a 4 X 10 bed I elevated last fall. Originally that 4 x 10 bed was a 4 x 8 cold frame which was a monster. I decided to make the change when I had to disassemble everything. It worked out nicely as the cold frame has more south exposure, easier to get into.
The tops are from storm windows that just lay on top. I have a couple of elastic cords holding it down.
In summer I remove the windows and use screens to keep bugs out..I still need to experiment and that will take more seasons.

original 4 x 8 monster.

This is much better for me..note elevated bed below.
