This is the day my soul waits for every year, Tomorrow starts the approximately 45 seconds of daylight returning to me.
The next day will be March 21st, which is my most favorite day of the year beside Thanksgiving Day.

Thanks for reminding me! Need to make a Fresnan planting calendar today. Of course, there's no sun!

When exactly is the winter solstice and what is it?
The December solstice happens at the same instant for all of us, everywhere on Earth. This year the solstice occurs on Tuesday December 22nd at 04:49 GMT (Universal time) with the sun rising over Stonehenge in Wiltshire at 08:04.

About another ten hours to go. I will have a glass of wine; my pagan contribution to the celebrations.

Toast to the new gardening year! All clouds and rain today so my Indian gardening calendar wouldn't have worked, anyway.

Right now the sun is taking a very low path over my garden.  The garden is being shaded most of the day by the trees at the boundary of my property.  Does this mean that the sun will begin to start moving back in a path that is more directly over my garden or is this winter solstice just about the number of hours of sun.

Re: Winter Solstice 2015

Post  trolleydriver on 12/22/2015, 2:53 pm

It's been wet and dreary here for days on end. I'm wondering if the sun still exists.

Tomorrow where I live we will get 4 seconds more time between sunrise and sunset (assuming there is a sun).  Things start to speed up as the days progress. The difference between December 27 and 28 daylength is 29 seconds. The difference between January 30 and 31 in 2016 is 2 minutes and seconds.

Looking at it another way:

Today the daylength is 8:42:51
January 1 - 8:47:21
February 1 - 9:44:47
March 1 - 11:10:21
April 1 - 12:49:18
May 1 - 14:19:36
June 1 - 15:26:49
June 21 - 15:40:26
And then the days start to get shorter again

Check your daylengths here:

I just checked the info for my latitude. Sunlight 9 hr 38 min 42 sec. Dec 28 it will be 9 hr 39 min 57 sec, a whopping minute longer. I'll take it.

We're getting 3 seconds longer daylight today than yesterday!  YEA!  And it looks like 3 seconds longer every day.

Of course, we have rain for the next couple of days, so it's not like I'll see it...  But I'll take it!

Interesting chart, TD.  Thanks for sharing it!  I suspect I'll be looking at it pretty frequently...!

It us my understanding that nothing will grow much if you have less than 10 hrs of daylight.  We were less than 10 hrs on Dec 9 and will be back over 10 hours on Jan 3.  So if the sun will just rise a little higher in the sky so it is not behind the trees most of the day, maybe something in my garden will start growing again.

Re: Winter Solstice 2015

Post  audrey.jeanne.roberts on 12/23/2015, 11:42 am

Seeds and plants begin to grow faster as the days grow longer, they have a built in sensor of sorts that lets them "wake up" and begin to grow when the days are increasing in length.

Plants that have been coasting all winter in my greenhouse and winter beds will begin to take off around mid-January.

I still have a zucchini that is alive under plastic in my modified "hot bed" set up.  I can't wait to see if and when it begins to take off and perhaps I'll get early zuccs.

Ain't growing grand?!

+1  About the same up here in Wilmington.  Plus we have had so many rainy, cloudy days.  Funny how I had to put up shade cloth during the summer over an area that now does not get direct because of the tree issue.
