I should have asked for one of those AeroGardens for Christmas. Oh well, I still have my new DIY grow light stand to play with.

Spent some of my Christmas money today at lunch to get a couple bags of Vermiculite and some greensand and bonemeal.  So, kind "Merry Christmas" present.  Got Vermiculite at local garden center, Roxbury Mills, about $34 per 4 c.f. bag, so no "savings".  So, I now have all the vermiculite and peat moss I need for two new beds this spring.  Between some bags of compost and what I have in piles I SHOULD be covered on compost as well.  If I'm short on compost, that's easier to find in spring than the other stuff, IMO.
Anyway, feels good to have that taken care of.  Next up, some lumber for bed frames as part of my "winter projects".

A crisp cold morning here, me with a hot cup of coffee. Did anyone get any gardening gifts from Santa?

Cold here (22F) but sunny. We have 7 adults and 5 grandchildren (ages 5 to 9) in the house ... enjoying great meals, opening presents, and having a good time. Just went for a nice walk in the neighborhood with my son-in-law. It's really quiet out there.

Santa brought me a compost thermometer and some watering gadgets to which you attach a bottle to and then insert into the soil (hopefully they will work in the Table Top when we are away in the summer). In addition, I received a portable greenhouse as shown in the photo below which was copied from amazon.

Herb scissors with 5 blades on each side.  Looks useful.  Also a white plastic bowl with a few holes of varying sizes on the side.  Apparently it is a kale stripper ????  You are supposed to put the stem or the rib of the kale through the hole and then pull and the kale leaves come off in the bowl.  Not too sure about this one especially since I don't grow kale but it is the thought that counts.  Also hand tools for my tool closet.

I got the Teaming With Microbes book, and a nonstick frying pan.
I also got an opportunity for a little seed swapping, and was able to borrow my late grandfather's Channellock tongue and groove pliers from my grandmother's garage to get my macro camera lens unscrewed so I could move it to a new housing (a critical piece of plastic had broken off the housing and the lens was in too tight to remove by hand.) Now I can take pictures of medium sized bugs again. Very Happy

I recently won a Smiley Face Chia Pet at our church dinner gift exchange. My eldest (9 year old) grandson has taken an interest in veggie gardening. So we wrapped up the Chia Pet and gave it to him for Christmas. He received tons of expensive and less expensive toys and clothes from parents, us and others. His favorite gift is the Chia Pet.  Very Happy

I got a self-contained Amaryllis plant. It seems to be encased in a waxy substance. It says not to water or do anything else. It is completely self-sufficient. It's really interesting. I'm required to send progress pics back to the lady who gave it to me. She's curious, too.Very Happy

The Chia Pet starts his journey.

I got a cute little garden tote,

the mini chopper I wanted for herbs, egg shells, and small quantities of veggie scraps for in-bed composting,

and the most awesome gardening shoes I've ever seen or heard of -- Sketchers. I know the kids spent way too much on these puppies, but I'll never need another pair of gardening shoes. They feel like a little bit of heaven on my feet. I can't wait to try them out in the garden. Cool

Razz
I'm gonna use little 4" pots as liners for the tote sections, then fill that tote with all the stuff I never have handy (scissors, string, etc.). From now on my supplies will always be at my side. Very Happy
