Fall, Winter in the Western Plains and Mountains

Post  Turan on 12/30/2015, 2:18 pm

A new year is beginning.  Time to think about the past season and plan for the new season.

I still have tomatoes ripening in a box in the cool mud room.  There are still potatoes and garlic in bins there too.  We ate the last of the carrots in soup for Christmas. Soon I need to make hominy from the corn.

Some things did not happen this fall.  The garlic cloves I saved out for replanting never got planted, maybe in an early break in the spring.  ANd somehow a compost pile never got put together from barn cleanings.  That will have to happen in early spring as well.  It will be ready for squash but not for broccoli.

This is the time of year I look at my garden plan.  I think I will put the broccoli where the peas were last year.  That might be enough of a boost without the extra compost.

Last picking from the garden this fall.

Corn drying in the window.  I got a couple pounds of kernels to make hominy from.  The yellow shriveled ones are some Sugar Dot cobs I missed on the down wind side.  I wonder if they also crossed with the Painted Mountain.

Thanks!

The peppers are Krimson Lee from Johny's and Hot Hungarian Wax plus a couple paplano.  They did really well for us this year.  I still have a couple of those HHW dried next to the stove to crumble into stew.
