Got a copy of the book!

Post  CNida89 on 2/9/2016, 6:17 pm

My wife's grandpa, who has been like a second father to me, has bought me a copy of Mel's Square Foot Gardening... not sure which one, or if there is more than one, but he said it's the same book he used and helped him achieve some great results on just about everything he's grown.

In fact, the only things he had trouble growing were grapes and bell peppers.... and the grapes obviously weren't in a raised bed, so... Very Happy

I think the only reason his bell peppers didn't take off is from what I have read, they are a somewhat heavy feeder.

At any rate, I am excited to have a copy of my own now, and I am looking forward to reading it and getting a solid foundation of knowledge beneath me.

Awesome! Lots of great advice in there. However, before you go digging or using soil, consult this site, or see which edition you got! I used the original back in the mid '90's and it was much better than traditional methods, but Mel has made a lot of tweaks that make SFGing easier and more fail-safe. cheers

I too am just reading the book. I tried it myself for 2 years with limited success, but the book has shone a whole new light.  I am stubborn and will not do everything, but will change my ways.  TrollyDriver put me on the right path.  No where to go but up (including root vegetables).

Congratulations,

May I suggest you read the book six or seven pages at a time , three or four times a day ( say a maximum of 15 minutes reading it each day ) ..
This gives you brain chance to assimilate what you have read  and stimulates your mind to focus more.

When you get to the charts at the end of the book do try and take time to look at one at a time for a day or two  and see how they really  tick .. At first they look like a simple chart but when  you  look into them a bit deeper there are all manner of things that have had to be considered in making them up.

I also offer that once you have gone through the book  start reading it again & again & again , right from the front cover to the back one ...... leave no words unread & the book will become your best friend for many years to come .
You see Mel's sneaky ,  he gets his little garden elves to slip a few extra words in once  your not looking , so you can say , " Well I never ...... That wasn't there when I read it last week .( with real conviction Shocked   )

These Mel's Elves keep on doing it for him for free ...... because they like him . Wink

I must have read this latest version  a couple of dozen times and still the elves keep on slipping new information in.    It's really strange I can tell you  . Laughing

Check out the ISBN code  in my strap lines it's the latest book number code
