Hello from Woodstock, GA

Post  mikki777 on 3/8/2016, 10:01 am

I've never gardened in my life. I started indoor herb pots in Jan this year and looking forward to starting Mel's 4 by 4 garden in my back yard. It looks like a good time to start this is the first week of April. Curious if I should go ahead and use starter pots for my veggies now.  I got his book yesterday and will learn as much as I can in the  next month. We got to visit the Southern Spring Show in NC this past weekend to get motivated. Smile I'm excited about this SFG method. My father in law made me a 4 by 4 wooden frame free standing so I don't have to bend over the whole thing on the ground. Just hoping it doesn't invite termites since it's wooden.

glad you\'re here mikki777 from Ohio! Glad you are here! Well you will love SFGing, but definitely read your book. It will save you so much work and mistakes along the way. Also, this site is a treasure chest of info...use the search box in the upper left hand corner and it will bring up posts with common key words.

Post often, we love to hear each other's journeys!

Hello Mikki.  Glad to see a fellow Georgian.  I am in Brooks, Ga.  About 25 minutes south of the Atlanta Airport.  Been doing SFG since the fall of 2011 I think.  It sure beats our red ga clay.

Mikki, Welcome to the forum from California! glad you\'re here So glad you have the book, and what a nice FIL you have to build you a free standing bed. We call them Table Tops or TT's. Half of my beds are TT's and I love them. Very Happy This is a perfect time to find all the ingredients for the Mel's Mix and get it made and in the box.

One thing I would advise is to take photos and keep a journal. We love photos so feel free to post your journey here.

Hello from another ga gardener glad you\'re here . Yes our last frost dates are around the beginning of April. If you want to grow you summer crops from seed they need to be started soon. Also some seeds can be started out in the garden. Good luck and feel free to post pictures

Hi again, Mikki. Yes, I'd get those babies going!

In looking at the long-term forecast, I'm only seeing 39 as the lowest for one night in the next month... So I'm hoping our frost is done!

Be prepared you guys.  This may be an unusually early spring but still be prepared.  In my area (significantly south of you both) I have a 50% chance of a frost starting about March 28.  The risk does not go down until about April 15.  I usually try to plant out some warm weather crops (like tomatoes) the last week of March and then be ready to cover them if the weather is predicted to go down below 32* F.  I usually look at the long range forecast just before I plant out to be on the safe side.
