Hi from San Diego (El Cajon) Caifornia

Post  san diego garden lady on 3/18/2016, 11:19 pm

I'm a first time gardener.  I am starting with 2 4x4 raised garden beds.  I purchased the beds from Home Depot.  I'm going to make my own when I add two more boxes soon.   I mixed my Mel's Mix myself.  That was a dirty job.  I'm having trouble finding the premix "Mel's Mix" in my city.  I was hoping not to have to mix it myself again. I also have a wine barrel with potatoes.  I swear they grow a few inches a day.

I'm looking forward to picking up some good information on this site.

I was born and raised in San Diego (Sharp's Memorial Hospital)!  I live in the mountains of Central California now.

You will be able to grow all year around if you want to do so.  There's tons of information here in the past posts, so all you have to do is do a site search on anything you're wondering about.

There are some really sweet, really helpful people here as well.  So if you don't find an answer, ask away!

Hi SDGL. Welcome from Atlanta, GA! We're glad you've joined us.

I know about those potatoes.... Amazing, isn't it?

We're a gabby bunch, so just jump in. And we like photos...

Welcome!

What kind of potatoes did you plant in the wine barrel?

El Cajon is kind of a sweet spot, do you know if you're in Sunset zone 21, 22 or 23?  Looks like most of El Cajon is in 22, but area is a pretty quick transition between the zones.

When I did my beds, I had the same challenges with my mix.  Since then, I keep my eyes open, but it looks like it has gotten even harder and more expensive to find the the vermiculite for the mix.

Welcome, SDGL, from Ohio! Sounds like you have gotten off to a good start with your boxes. I love growing potatoes, the organic ones are so expensive and hard to find at the grocery!

What to you plant to grow? What do you like to eat, first and foremost? Post often, and pictures are really helpful!

glad you\'re here

SD Lady,  Welcome to the Forum from Fresno!   glad you\'re here   Year around gardening, woo hoo.

Don't forget our Vermiculite Data Base on the Home/Index page?  Therm-O-Rock comes from AZ so it should be available at a "reasonable" price in So Cal.  http://squarefoot.creatingforum.com/Vermiculite-Entry-Form-h1.htm
