Hey, from CT!

Post  hammock gal on 4/5/2016, 5:02 pm

Hello! I've been lurking for a while now, and thought I might as well jump in. I'm recently retired, and this will be my first SFG. I remember watching the TV program back in the day, and I've bought the New SFG book, but I'm sure I'll have many questions, with this being my first time. I have gardened before, but not extensively. I'm planning on lots of tomatoes, some cukes and sugar snap peas, and I have pepper seeds germinating on the window sill. I'm just waiting for the weather to cooperate. We had snow yesterday, and it's only in the 20s today. Brrrrrrrr! I'm getting really antsy, so hopefully I won't have to wait too long. I'm starting with one 4x4 bed, but I'm already thinking about another one for next year! I love the idea of forums like this, people who have varying levels of experience, all sharing what they know. It's a great way to learn.

Hammock gal, Welcome to the Forum from California. glad you\'re here I started gardening in 2013 when I was completely retired. This Forum saved my first beds from mediocre failure. The only problem is, it is addictive. Must make more beds. Must make more homemade compost.

Thanks guys! Retirement has been everything I hoped it would be, time to do all the things I love, but didn't have time for before, gardening being one of them. Most of the snow melted since yesterday, but temps still in the 20s. C'mon Spring!!!

I've been practicing posting pics, so let's see if I've got it right now. Here are my little Thunderbolt pepper sprouts. (Fingers crossed.) Yay, it worked. Every single seed germinated. Looks like I'm going to be giving some pepper plants away.

Welcome from Coastal NC. As you can already tell, the folks on this forum are the best. As you said, we have a variety of experience and knowledge and we love to share and help each other.

Be sure to follow Scorpio Rising's advice and keep a journal...I wish I did and am planning on doing one this year.

Sounds like a good idea. I actually have a garden journal that a friend gave me a while back, that I've never used. This will be a good opportunity to put it to use.

Hi Hammock Gal!
Congratulations on your retirement and Welcome from Delaware!  There is so much information on here, and so many helpful people!  I've been doing this for 3 years (not so much last year just one crop) but always come here if I can't find it in the book.  On thing that I did do, on the advice of others here, is I took the book to my local Staples and had them spiral bind it and add plastic covers to the front and back.  This makes it so much easier to use, as I take mine out to the garden most times!
I wish you much luck with your first venture into SFG!  If you are anything like me, you may want to expand and start a 'fall' garden this year (at least that's what I told my hubby so he would build me a second bed).  We have 2 12x4 beds and I'm already trying to get a third one built.  Laughing.
So, welcome aboard, look around and ask questions!  This is the best group of people and all want to share their successes, failures and advice!
