Facebook - SFG Foundation postings

Post  sanderson on 4/9/2016, 2:22 pm

I thought I would start a thread to post what I see on the SFG Foundation Facebook page.

Kim Roman wrote a nice response explaining why SFG is so much more efficient and less labor intensive than row gardening. This one exhausted me just looking at the photos!

I'm afraid I do not have one and a half hours to watch a video like this, so thank goodness for the pictures.

I had to smile at the explanation for dumping 250 bags of manure on the garden.  He only got it for free because the bags were splitting and they could not be sold.

The thought of all that work required makes me feel tired. Very Happy

I have watch his videos of his garden, hope that the foundation has his permission to share and uses his picture/ videos. He also has lots of ducks and preserves most of his harvest as it ripens. He puts in loads of hours and energy in the garden and has now decreased the size of it.

Do you sell your excess harvest? Tell us about it. Were the regulations a challenge? Has it been as successful as you'd hoped? Anything else?

Posted on the SFG Certified Instructors Facebook.  Wayne Schirner, CI, of Belton, TX, built this 4' x 12' demonstration bed at his local Master Garden.  "The bricks are 3.5" thick, 11.75" long, and 7.5" tall. They are buried 1.5" deep. There is a 2-3" thick layer of mulch around the bed, which makes the bed look not as deep. I got the bricks from Lowe's and the inside dimensions are 47" wide by 12'3" long. There are 4 bricks on each end and 13 bricks along each side. Total cost for the bricks was < $100. Expensive, but permanent. No adhesive required to connect the bricks."

Okay, so this one wasn't posted by the Foundation, but it promotes raised beds. http://organicgardening.about.com/od/howtogrowveggies/fl/What-is-Raised-Bed-Gardening.htm?utm_content=7269895&utm_medium=email&utm_source=cn_nl&utm_campaign=gardening&utm_term

What a great idea.. "Food is free".  You got my wheels turning now. thinking.  I'm thinking about building a SFG out by the street and put a "Food is free" sign on it and see how it goes. Lately, there's been some pretty rowdy kids (thugs) move into the neighborhood and they might destroy it but I think it's worth a try.

I still have time to put out some fall veggies. HMmmmm. To build or not to build thinking

I love those as well!  I love love love radishes.  Ordered some daikon seeds from Pinetree/Superseeds so I can have more of those!

Ever had a radish sandwich?  Yum.  Bread, butter or mayo, radishes sliced, salt/pepper.  To. Die. For.  Beer.    Same exact recipe for onion sandwich.  My dad's Depression food that has deep rooted comfort-roots!
