Hello from Taft, Tennessee

Post  tpitts on 4/13/2016, 2:26 pm

Hello from Taft, Tennessee!  I live in an tiny little community, just over the state line from Huntsville, Alabama.  I have had some success with growing vegetables among my flower beds, but wanted to try raised beds.  I have ordered the new SFG book, and am anxiously waiting for it to arrive.

I became interested in raised bed/SFG after my husband had a heart attack in January, and we had to make many additional changes in our eating habits.  I now make much more of our food from scratch, including sauces, etc., and wanted to have a ready supply of vegetables on hand.

I have many questions, and am hoping the book will answer them.  We currently have three 4X8 beds, that are 24" tall.   We will have a gravel base, and then soil, compost, etc. on top.  The reason for doing this as opposed to a bed sitting directly on the ground is that we have a terrible problem with both moles and armadillos, and they have pretty much ruined our yard, and we didn't want them burrowing in the beds.

Anyway, thank you all in advance for your advice.  I'm sure I will need all the help I can get!

Tpitts,  Welcome to the Forum from California!  glad you\'re here  There are other folks with armadillos so hopefully they will be able to join in.  For SFG, only 6" + of Mel's Mix is needed.  Are you wanting 2' high beds for a reason, because they aren't necessary, just a personal preference.  Table top beds are another way to escape critters that like to burrow under neath beds.  Placing 1/4" hardware cloth (metal mesh) under the beds is another method.  When you read the book, you will have a better idea of what you can do.  We are here to help.  Also, the Search feature has a gillion topic, photos and information.  Happy reading and gardening! Very Happy

Hi TPitts. Welcome from the Atlanta, GA area.

My hubby grew up in Florence, AL and has family in Gates, Forked Deer, etc. So we're somewhat familiar with your area, although they're a bit NW of you.

You might want to check to make sure, but I think I'm your regional host. From the Home Page, you should find a link to see what region you're in. Let me know if you can't find it...

Glad you're here! :-)
