more garden pics

Post  landarch on 4/25/2016, 11:06 pm

Well, my plants survived the storms (same system that hit Kate)...even more intense storms predicted for tonight.   Here are some pics of both my home SFG's and my spot in the community garden.  I hope to have some carrot pics tomorrow morning.

2x4 box with onions and baby leaf spinach

view of the garden over the 4x4 beet box...it's nice to be in the garden right before dusk...low sun angles make the plants come alive.

first sign of a broccoli head...broccoli is one of my most finicky plants (tends to bolt in the spring)...also a sprinkle of BT dust for cabbage worms.

sugar ann pea trellis...they have exploded out of the ground with the recent rains....covered in blossoms.

first pea pod

igloo lettuce...forms a loose rounded head with perfect for lettuce wraps

buttercrunch lettuce - picking nice heads over the last week or so.

At home in the SFG - michihili chinese cabbage

At home in the SFG - tuscan kale

my favorite shots are in the evening with the camera just above the plant tops.

skies are turning black here in KC...street and parking lights coming back on...supposed to heat up to 80 degrees then more severe threats from OK to NEB this evening.

It will be a few days before working in the community garden...I'll be able to plant in the SFG same day as a rain.

At this time of year, my eyes are hungry for color after all the white and gray and browns of winter. Thanks for all the beautiful shades of green!

I saw that nasty storm that passed through KC this morning on the weather radar. Hope everything's okay, there.

I decided to hold off putting out the rest of my tomatoes one more day. Don't want them to have to face a hail storm their first night in their new home. Then again, there's always next week, not to mention the entire month of May to get through.

big hail reported in north Kansas City...in Johnson County just nice rain.  I moved seedlings at home to our covered deck...seedlings at the community garden were moved to an open shed.

It's supposed to reach 80 this afternoon with high humidity...energy to fire up even more severe storms from 6-11.  It's still pretty cool outside so hopefully the heat stays away.

I would say over half of the people in the community garden have some tomatoes in already...and green bean seedlings coming up.

it didn't get hot and humid today so hopefully there is little energy for strong thunderheads tonight.

Anyway, haven't posted carrot pics in a while so here we go...

Tendersweet carrots seeded a few weeks ago...12 squares in a deep 4x4 box...with squirrel protection.

2x2 deep carrot box

carrots...front squares are transplants started inside early from tiny soil blocks...took the squirrel protection off a few days ago.
