May Avatar: Anything Goes!

Post  CapeCoddess on 5/1/2016, 7:03 am

Back in the day Rooster used to start these monthly SFG themed avatar threads. For those of you who love to post and/or look at photos let's revise this idea!  Show us what's going on in May!

Since I have adjusted cooking duties in our kitchen for a while I decided to go back to cast iron.
Recently discovered how to properly keep and maintain keep the iron.
Such a better feeling having all that heat doing the work..
I did some research and found this company( Lodge ) has their own foundry in Tennessee.
This is one of their products.

I'm not very good at explaining things  Embarassed , especially on cloudy days like this one, so let me reiterate:  what these monthly avatar themes mean is that you post a photo  of you garden or life relating to the theme for that month, and then you use that photo as your avatar for the month.

See how my photo above matches my avatar? Questions?

PS  I use Lodge, too, Jimmy.  And Martha Stewart came out with a great set back in the day. YUM! Wink

Leeks

Post  yolos on 5/1/2016, 7:33 pm

Okay, here goes.  Leeks I just harvested today.  I planted them last fall and they just started putting up seed stalks so I had to harvest the whole 4 x 4 bed at the same time.  Too many leeks for me.  My friends and family will get the left overs.  Last year I froze some and dehydrated some so I may also do that this year.  A friend of mine (a good ole country gal) said she roasts them so I may give that a try also.  They are not as big around as last year but they started bolting early so I had to pull them no mater what size.

Well, I'm afraid I'm stuck with this avatar for now.  My daughter and I were messing around with making up this avatar, and I inadvertently erased the one of stuff I grew late last season (and my computer with those shots died).

As soon as I actually grow something, I'll use that.  Smile

Sums up SFG

Post  Windmere on 5/16/2016, 8:00 am

I know we've passed the halfway mark for May.  However, I just figured out that I can save images from my previous posts (and not depend on my now dead old computer).

To me, this image sums up SFG.  A variety of veggies, some fruit and even a marigold... all doing well in minimal space.

This shot was taken early one summer morning 2015.

Last fall, I bought a full set of Lodge cookware including the Iron cooking table. I found a small sticker on the leg of the table that said "Made in China". I called Lodge about it and they said about 20% of their products are now made in China because American Manufactures cant keep up.

Heh heh, that was funny.  It's easy to do that though, sometimes the text of the threads gets difficult to follow.  Scorpio, I'm glad to see you are enjoying your kale.  I let mine go to seed two years ago and I am still getting volunteer plants.

Yeah, I am really surprised by that. All the kale that I had ever tasted was really strong, but I have no experience with it, either.

Well, I really like kale after a frost.  Some kales produce sugars to prevent from freezing and the result is actually quite sweet.  Summertime kale does have more of a bite (to me, very similar to collard greens... which I never had until moving to the south).

Me neither. Had turnip greens growing up, child of Depression era parents. But when I lived in Nashville in my early 20s, got into cheese grits, collards, mustards, country ham, all that yummy Southern food! Tough on the waistline, though! I cared back then. LOL
